 Picking Up The Ladies While Fishing For Jack, Snook And Permit

Joe and I fly down to Florida. Get off the airplane. Do business until 6pm. Eat a steak at some fancy joint and we are fishing by 8pm. God, I hate going out to dinner. I don't care how nice the darn place is, who's gonna be there or what they are serving. It always intereferes with fishing time. I will take a slice of pizza in my car over Filet Mignot or Lobster Tails anyday. The air temps and water temps are 85 and 70 and fish are everywhere. We showed up to our nearly limitless Snook and Jack Holes and the fish were piled on top of each other. We only fished and hour and half and we both had some nice fish on and sight fished to some good sized snook. I was using a shrimp pattern and casting out beyond a great light. WHAM! I had a huge fish on. A big Snook, but he broke me off. These fish will snap 15 lb. test in a heartbeat. They have a sharp gill plate and it slice mono easily. So I bumped up to 30 lb fluorcarbon. Joe was using a good sized finger mullett patter and got one small snook and had a bunk on. We were kinda tired so we did not fish all that hard. Joe did catch this weird looking fish, that neither of us can find the name for. It is in the Jack family. Not really a fighter or anything worth a damn, but kinda cool to catch. Then I got a big lady fish. Guys in Florida call these trash fish, but I guess everything is perspective. Granted, I would not pursue these fish purposfully, however they are fun to catch. The are decent size, they jump like crazy and they fight well for their size. So, I guess its like anything else, one man's trash is another man's gold. Of course, I would prefer Tuna and/or Tarpon but I am not a picky guy. I will catch whatever is around and have fun doing it. That's what I love about Florida. You never know what
your gonna get on the fly. There are all types of crazy looking fish all of which are not catchable in Northern New England. So, for me, none of them are trash fish. They are all a new experience and all fun to catch and look at. Now, tonight, I might be singing a different toon. I want a big snook, jack, permit or a Tarpon. Stay tuned!

by MarshallD on April 28, 2004 http://www.flyanglersguide.com | Those Lady fish are fun alright and a pull when they're good sized, jump like crazy! You're right. You really never know what to expect when you cast a fly in Fla! I had my first client today at Shawmut. Cold, windy, but we hooked him up alright on 2 browns. They got off, but we know they're there. !!
