Do a little dance. May is the time for hatches (both good and bad ie: Black flies and May flies), rain, fly fishing and cook outs. My son and some of our friends went to the Old Lady, the Old Girl, the Mighty Kennebec River. Sunday was one of my best days on the Old Girl. Fishing the east side of the river I was able to land 9 fish and lost countless others. The hatch was on time 1:00 pm, spotty but enough to get the fish turned on. I set up some of the new comers with nymph rigs. All with small # 16 black stone with a # 18 copper john dropper on 9’ leaders with the indicator high on the leader. This is my favorite way to fish for the wise old Bows of the Kennebec. Well it worked. Joey Walked the crowed river, fishing seam after seam and picked up 2 nice fish. Dan fished by me and also picked up 2 nice fish. Bruce? Well he at least lost a few! I had the honey hole. Feet shuffling, nymphs flowing and fish feeding. I stood on the same shelf for 3 hours and the fish stayed with me. I would shuffle my feet and 5 minutes later the fish would turn on. For those of you who don’t know, that is known as the Colorado skip, Montana drag and my favorite the San Juan shuffle. I laid a nice mend off the shelf and Bam!! a nice Bow. 15 minutes late Bam another BIG Bow. This was really cool because Joey (Who has been out fishing me) was there to net the fish. When the fishing gets a little slow do a little dance and don’t forget the nymphs! See ya on the river Joe-m
P.S. We came home to

steaks on the grill and home made salad. Now that’s a Sunday!!

Montana Drag
by jeremy on May 27, 2004 http://www.fliesandfins.com
I kinda like the Montana Drag. Yup if the bugs ain't hatching - nothing wrong with giving em a little kick in the arse. Get em moving. Somtimes I purposfully walk up the higher end (shallower part) of a shelf and then fish it back. Some guys look at me and think I am walking through the fish - little do they know that I am simply feeding the fish that are waiting just below the drop off of the shelf.

SWEET Rainbow - nice and dark. Boy - Shawmut is an amazing fishery this year.
