Some of you know my husband, Jeremy. If you know him, you know how much he loves fly fishing. Sometimes I wonder who comes first, the fish or me. Anyway, we were in Charlestown RI over Memorial Day weekend and I thought I’d tag along with him on one of his fishing excursions to see what the big deal is about fly fishing. On Saturday, it was a bit too cold for the ocean, so we ventured to a beautiful little spot in Carolina. The sun was shining and the birds were chirping as we drove to a great hole and sought out the trout. As Jeremy fished, I was catching the sun rays and then I heard a big splash. I looked over and Jeremy had hooked a beautiful brook trout. This caught my attention and the next thing I knew he handed me his fly rod. I started to cast and of course, kept hitting something behind me. Jeremy spent the next hour or so teaching me how to cast. I caught nothing, but enjoyed the sun and being out with my husband. Day Two – We woke up and decided to go back to the hole. This time, he brought a rod for me. I started out nymphing and within a few minutes had caught my very first brook trout! I was so excited! I even held the slimy thing and then fully revived it and released it in the river. I was feeling confident so I told Jeremy we were competing for the day. Minutes later, he had caught 3 fish to my 1. Then, another one on for me! And, then, more for Jeremy. After a few hours, we took a drive to the marsh – I took a

break while Jeremy waded out to try for stripers. Soon after, he was wading back in and asked me to go back to the hole with him. Remember, I usually only go with him for an hour or so ... It had already been hours, but, hey, I was having fun. Back to the hole we go. It’s early evening, the sun is setting and again, it’s just me and him and the fish. We’re both nymphing side by side. I get one on – it’s big!! A big brook trout. I play with the fish and let him swim around before I reel him in. I caught one more and Jeremy caught quite a few. Brook Trout Score for the day: Jeremy 14, Keely 4. Even though I lost our fishing competition, my first fly fishing trout experience was a lot of fun. You might just see me on the river sometime with my husband. PS On Jeremy’s last cast – he caught a nice brown trout on a dry fly. No picture, but I can vouch for him!
