Fresh Water Make That A Large Please: Big Maine Brown Trout!

Yesterday, June 3, 04 the water at Shawmut was so low, it looked like clam flats. That was because they were working on a dam in Waterville. Gee, I hate how Hydro Companies play with the river flow!. Anyway, after awhile, the siren went off and the river rose to a height that made several anglers wade to shore, frustrating because their earlier success at seeing rising fish was wiped away by the rising water. My client and I waded down river and met up with Scott Davis, who owns Fish and Foul Guide Service. He was teaching 2 clients and fishing a little himself, when I saw his rod bent, like he was hooked to a striper! Scott was 50 feet into his backing and was fighting a large fish who had run down sulking in a deep pool. My client and I waded over and chatted with Scott as he was battling what turned out to be

the fine Brown Trout pictured here. Scott was using tandem weighted PT nymphs, set 10-inches apart, 10-foot leader and small foam indicator. He was instructing and demonstrating how to fish this rig to his clients, and, he was definately using the best technique at the time, don't you think? Persistance in the face of rising water! The fish were still there, we just have to get down to them. You gotta have faith.

what a catch - i have heard a lot about scott davis through the grape vines. i am always hearing that he understands the river better than almost anyone and that he is a good flyfisherman. based on this article and photo - i ain't gonna argue with anyone about that. what a great fish. i would have loved to just watch the battle.
