 Sometimes Trout Love Small Stuff: Sometimes Tiny Stuff

There I was, on this beautiful stretch of water. No wind and trout rising everywhere. The water was crystal clear and moving slowly. Truly a challenge. I could not rely on my usual laziness and throw out a wooly into the quick water. There was no quick water. So, I cut off my straight mono leader/tippet and got down to business. Here was the deal, and I know you have been in this situation. The trout were feeding on top but I could see no bugs. Of course, I threw out the Maine standards. Adams and nothing. Caddis and zero. Sulfur and Nada. Ok, so I guess I will look and see what's going on. When I looked closely I saw them. Tons of tiny little midges. These tiny little bugs scurrying on the surface of the water. So, I tied on super thin tippet and the smallest thing in my box. An old timer once told me that the fly color is nonsense. He said all that matters is size and presentation. So, I tied on this tiny fly and waited. I found one fish rising rhythmatically. I looked behind me to make sure I had plenty of casting space. I false casted as little as possible and rolled out a nice cast. The tiny little fly dropped within inches of where he rose last. I gave the fly a little twitch and there was no WHAM! It was a very subtle take. I watched the Brown Trout come up to the fly ever so slowly. He put his nose up to it
and then slurped it off the surface. I set the hook and brought him in slowly. He was not a large fish, but a beautiful fish. Beautiful colorings. I released the fish and relaxed a bit. I thought to myself how much I love living in Maine and how much I love flyfishing for trout. There I was in this great section of river. Nobody around. No cars, no cell phones, no pagers, no senseless small talk, no computer, no complaints, no opinions, Nothing. Just the running water, the fish, the sun, the fresh air and me. I thought, for a moment, about how today was Sunday. Many people attended masses and go to church on Sundays. I guess I do to, its just that my church does not have a steeple and pews and sermons. My church just has water, air and sun and if I am patient I am blessed with a few nice trout.
