 Jacks And Snooks Under The Florida Lights

Simple Solutions is working on a few projects in the Southwest region of Florida. So, you know what that means. Fly fishing from sun-up till 9am. Work from 9 to 5. Snooking and Jacking until the wee hours of the morning. The water is so warm down here right now and there is a tremendous amount of bait in the water. I arrived yesterday afternoon and Joe and I took a few casts under the dock lights. Snook and Jacks were everywhere and I watched them attack the helpless baitfish that drifted into the lights. The water was very calm and the Snook were a little tough to trick. They were not interested in the bigger EP flies or Shrimp Patterns. They seemed to be on small stuff. So, Joe tied on a little Crazy Charlie and put it just beyond the lighted water. He started to strip the fly from the darkness and into the light and WHAM! A Jack pounced on his fly. Not a really big Jack, but fun to catch. Joe continued to fish his favorite light and I saw some frantic splashing going on at another light. I walked down and stood in the shadows, careful not to spook the fish. There were loads of Snook and Jacks circling under the light. I stripped just enough line from my reel and casted into the darkness. As I stripped the fly from the darkness into the light a big Snook nipped my fly but missed it. I stopped stripping and let the fly sink. I continued stipping ever so slowly and WHAM! A decent Snook was on my line. I maneuvered him
around some pilings and brought him in for a photo and let him go. We were both kinda tired so we called it a night. The fish ain't going anywhere. There are loads of fish down here right now. Bait is everywhere. So, we will give them a shot again this afternoon. Hopefully, I can hook into a nice Jack or something at sunset. There is alot of bait and fish on the beaches and the fish seem to start feeding on shore during the last hour of sunlight.
