Salt Water Vacation Bonito Clinic: Hang On To That 8 Weight!

Fly fishing vacation… My friends came down from Maine for a week of fly fishing, fun in the sun. The only problem was they brought the Maine weather with them. Cold ( 50 degrees in the morning and 65 with rain in the afternoon with 15 to 25) I know some of you are in the middle of winter but 50 in Florida in March!!! Today the wind settled down so we finally got out. My daughter and her friends ready to go, off for a fly lesson and hopes of getting some hook up.

After some conversation we hit the Cuba wreck 3 miles off the pass. There are a lot of boats around catching King fish so we hook up a steel leader and start the fly casting clinic… within a few minutes the newbie’s are getting the fly out far enough for a strip. We are on the wreck so you just have to get the line out 20’ feet or so to be effective. I turn around to enjoy the mid day sun and boom Jen’s friend Bobby has my 8 wt stressed to the max!!!

I started to tell him hit the bow ..no the stern.. no the side.. watch the motor.. etc. I don’t know how the rod held up. A 15 minute

fight and I tailed a beautiful Bonita.. What a great day with some friends and a new fly fisherman hooked for life.. Take a young adult fly fishing see ya on the Cuba Wreck Joe-m

First fish on the fly and it's an albie? You've spoiled him! Fun story.
