 Winter Fly Fishing: Snow Or Not, It's All Good

I hadn't talked to a friend in a while, and it was just after christmas. I was armed with a new reel, new pack, and a ton of accesories. I couldn't have been happier. My friend gave me a call one night, and we planed to do some cold water nymphing in my home river. We meet up Friday night and started our usual routine, tie flies till you drop. After a whole bunch of cool flies we passed out, and found ourselves on the river the next morning. Something was different, not a soul in sight. It was so peacefull, just me and my best fishing partner. I love fly fishing with lots of people, sharing patterns and what not, but once in a while it's nice to just get away from it all.
We walked down under the
bridge and found a few fish, just waiting to be caught. We both had had our share of shack nasties lately, and this day was sure to shut us up for a while. After an hour or so, Caleb tied on a muddler. Neither of us had ever had any luck on this fly before, but he tied it on without hesitation. I looked over while he was picking the ice off his guides than he noticed a bend in his fly rod. The fish broke off, and I took out my own muddler. After a few casts I had a Brown Trout on, and he fought pretty hard despite the cold temps, and we got a picture and released the dark colored fish. Caleb got 2 nice colored browns that day, and we had the pleasure of fly fishing and eating lunch in a snow storm. What could be better? Those fish were not anything special, nothing either of us hadn't seen before, but it was just good to get out. The snow just made things better, and added a few great pics to the album. It's all good. Nothing like fly fishing in the winter

when i was your age i did it all - soccer, baseball, music, football, lacrosse, golf team.....i remember very little of these activities and the kids i did them with.....BUT MY FISHING BUDDIES....they are burned in my memory and I can even remember, with crystal clarity, specific days and specific fish and when i look back those are the best memories for me. |
