Salt Water Florida Tarpon: In Search Of The Silver King

Tarpon Video Hi Speed Only

Tarpon are by far the best fish to catch/hook/jump/stalk… you get the message. Yesterday was a special day for me. I had the privilege of spending the day with my son Tarpon fishing. This is special because we work together (this can get taxing at times for both of us) and we both have the passion for fly fishing. Today was Joey’s day at the casting platform. I was on the camera. What a day. Sunny, warm, a slight breeze and we found some of the Silver Kings “laid up” as our guide Capt Ken Chambers poled us around the flat. Not long and Ken is instructing Joey on the set strip and the does and dont's of fly fishing for Tarpon. Ken spots a fish. “There, 2 o'clock. Two false casts and the black death bunny fly hits it’s mark. Joey sets the hook and drops the rod only to recover with his left hand and the battle is off. Jumping fish, spooking other Tarpon and the battle is on. With in 2:00 minutes a bull shark is on this frantic fish pushing the fish to fight even more. Joey got the fish to the leader several times and on the final run the leader broke at the boat!! All is well though the

fish had enough energy to avoid the shark. It was a special day in deed… Tarpon are not a fish they are a passion. They get in your blood, the hunt, the stalk the cast, the environment all keeps you wanting more. Special day you bet!! I was there when my son hooked his first Silver King and I know he will remember it for the rest of his life. Now it’s in his blood!! See ya on the flats Joe-m

Great video. Funny, every time it jumped, I bowed a little at my desk.

Awesome footage. I'm sure you will be pretty messed up from this for a while. I'm going after my Silver King in a month. I hope I'm as fortunate as you!

It is addictive indeed that tarponfishing.
I was lucky enough that Mark Ward from EA Angler showed me this pond where the so called baby tarpon where about in good numbers.

My first hookup left me shaking for an hour at the waters edge. I returned to that pond almost on a daily basis and fished often deep into the night. From the countless hookups I only bagged two or three fish.

First problem was the underhand strike, not accustomed to this I often janked the fly out of the tarpons mouth by striking high. The fights where always spectacular. Long runs and jumps all over the place, these fish where swimming dynamite.
It was downright maddening when after 10 minutes of jumps and runs the hook suddenly came out, these critters have armoured mouths.

I hope I can make it to Florida this fall and have another Tarpon expirience.
If you ever get a chance try it, you will be impressed!

Man, that is outrageous!!! Love the footage. If that R.I. striper trip messed me up, I can only imagine what a tarpon trip would do. Great Job!
