 Alaska: First Big Bow Of The Year - Felt Like The First Time

Kodiak, Alaska. The day is May 19, 2005 and it is 4:30 p.m., I have just sat around all day tying flies and have the itch to go fly fishing. So, at the spur of the moment I left everything behind and loaded the pontoon boat and fly fishing gear into my old beater Ford truck (fit for the best of trout bums). I drove to a nearby lake and admired the glass calm lake surrounded by spruce trees as i put on my gear. For the next hour and 50 minutes i worked lots of shoreline with a few hits but no fish landed. At 6:50 p.m. i cast a small secret nymph to the edge of a log and some lilly pads. I watched my line as the fly sank. My fly rod doubled over and I set the hook, even though the fish probably set it itself. Immediately, an enormous Rainbow Trout cleared the water several times and then took off like a freight train into my backing. I fought the fish for 5 minutes only to almost have the fish netted but then witness another blistering run. After
another 5 minutes i netted the fish and admired the 25 inch hen rainbow trout. Since i was by myself in a pontoon boat i knew any pictures i took would be crappy because i was going to realease the fish. I took some photos for my satisfaction and released the magnificant fish. I have caught many big bows before but this one made me remember how the other ones felt and why I am obsessed with large bows!

by jeremy on May 22, 2005 http://www.ineedasimplesolution.com | | nice work kodiak......we were a little worried about you up there....wondering..."what the heck? he's up there in alaska..where are the trout/salmon that all of us drool over in the lower 48 states...."------Now, as the last frontier begins to thaw, the fly fishing begins to heat up - and fish like that (25 inch wild rainbows).....make any fly fisherman drool. nice work. keep them coming. |
