 Looking For East Outlet: Maine Salmon On The Fly

The weekend was forecasted to be hot, hazy, and humid. I spoke to Jeremy on Saturday and we thought seriously about fishing the Shawmut section of the Kennebec River late in the afternoon. As the temp approached 100 and the humidty index mirrored the temperature we thought better of it and stayed home. That was more then Jeremy could stand. So Sunday morning at 4am he hit the road for Shawmut. After dealing with some home business that required my attention, I hit the road at 9am with plans to meet Jeremy at Shawmut. That worked well, except that when I got there Jeremy and Joey had caught several fish early and said everything had turned off. Joey left to keep his wife happy and Jeremy and I headed to another nice stretch of the Kennebec. As we entered the water we quickly realized we were there just in time for a water release. So much for the fishing here. Now the dilemma, do we continue to search for fishable waters and how far are we willing to travel. You guessed it there really isn't a limit as to how far we would go. So Jeremy promised me cold clear water to take away the heat and lots of fish if I would drive to his favorite Maine spot. We covered some miles in a relatively short period of time and found Jeremy's favorite pool vacant of any other fly fisherman. A nymph rig for Jeremy and a Wooly Bugger for me. It wasn't long before we were into some very
respectable trout and salmon. I would say overall we caught and released 15 fish between the 2 of us and missed several more on a dry caddis fly fished on the edge of the seam. So we accomplished our misson, we found several fish, and a comfortable outlet from the heat and humidity. As I arrived home at 11 pm I thought it sure has been a long day, but one well worth the effort.
