Salt Water Spent A Couple Days On The Water: Literally

After some bad news from Salmon River Country, whippa convinced me to postpone my most recent plans to chase some fresh silver kings. I had a week to burn, and the past few days had a great falling tide in the morning. The outgoing water usually means some great summer sightfishing on the outside points and bays near Chokoloskee Island for snook, reds, and tarpon. So I booked a guide for the poling duties and fished hard for 6 days. Three rods were necessary for what we might encounter: one 9 wt. for subsurface flies, one 9 wt. for poppers and gurglers, and one 12 wt. in case of an encounter with a dinosaur (tarpon).

We covered water from the sawgrass creeks inland to the outer points and shoals and had many opportunities to use all my tools and skills to put hooks in quite a few of our

targeted species, as well as some not so common flyrod targets like the 20 lb. jewfish i sightfished laid up on a bank. Hot weather + light winds = great fishing in SW Florida for the next two months.

love the title dave :) - very creative ---- i added the word "literally" - hope you don't mind. sounds like money well spent...that;s the thing about florida....a waders options are very limited...in order to really get the good stuff you gotta be in a boat...so - i guess a guy has 2 options - buy a flats boat and pole yourself around - NOT! === or just factor in a guide with your fly fishing outings. Either way...they both cost money...but your way is probably better...no trailer, no filling the tank, no maintenance, no poling for you, no storing the boat....just on and off. ...... smooth.

nice work -- that is a nice looking red fish. healthy for sure.

good thing you postponed the salmon river trip...use your ticket to meet me there when the steelies are in...maybe we will go in early october...i don't want to hear you crying about the cold temps again ---- geez you florida guys have it so easy...a little subzero temps are good for the soul:)

Good times Dave. Way better than being Upstate in August. Opps are limited untill after Labor Day. I'm glad you got to play with some pigs down there. Looks as though you may have to baten down the hatches for a couple days for Katrina! Stay safe, I'll fish with you soon.

Cool report Dave, I can't wait to join you in Naples for some days on the water. Bringing three rigs is a great plan. I'll have a 10-weight with me this time down, not to be totally outgunned by the bigger fish.

Good to see you!
