Salt Water Maine Salt Water: Perfect Days

Stripers On Fly Watch Video

I spend hundreds of days on the water every year and I would say that only a handful could be qualified as the perfect day. Obviously, any day on the water is a good day and some good days are better than others. But it is memories of those elusive perfect days that calm me to sleep and fuel my obsession. For me perfection is determined solely by the magnitude of the experience. Some are perfect for their comedic qualities, some for their adventure. But those perfect days I enjoy the most are the ones that are perfect for the fishing. Those rare days were nearly all of those factors that usually conspire against you come together in your favor. It does not mean that the wind is ideal for casting or the temperature is optimum for comfort. It does not mean my knots all hold and my cast’s all turned over or my streamers all ran true.

For me the perfect days are those days when the wind, the water, the moon and all those other factors come together to put the fish on the feed and me into this fish. Nowhere in the world can all of those factors come together more perfectly, or conspire more tragically against you, than on the east coast during fall. Stripers and Blues, I have found, can bless you or curse you. And finally after two years of trying I was able to experience one of those days that I could say “you should have been here yesterday”. That is not to say that it was without effort or without problems. Sure it was windy at times. Sure the boat we had was not running top notch. Sure we had to search for fish. But the wind pushed the bait into a sheltered cove. And the boat that was graciously lent to us got us to fish and safely back again. And the knowledge, experience and keen

eye of a good friend lead me to fish, lots of fish, thousands of fish to be sure. So as I sit here recalling this experience, preparing for my next trip, I can only hope that I will again be rewarded so favorably.

Awesome video. I love how you guys captured the frenzy of the birds in the background. Seeing that makes it hard to sit at a desk when I know that could be happening outside right now. (With blues though, still waiting for the stripahs to migrate a little south.)

Nice job, Jason.

I love those days, too. The excitement that you are witnessing one of those truly well timed events is enough to satisfy you...well, at least untill you get the itch again.

Sometimes it is almost so good that you can just sit and marvel at the events unfolding before your eyes. That is untill Jeremy cracks the reins and points out another fish. lol
