 Steelhead: Hooking Steel But Couldn't Close The Deal

Rain, thunder, lightning, with 30 mph wind gusts made things a bit challenging today. In the morning we covered nearly 3 miles of river fishing deep runs and riffled water. Our only excitement was hooking and losing two decent sized steelhead. We trudged back to the car in hopes for a new plan. All of us were wet, cold and worst of all skunked. Whippa made the call to move down river to some slicks that held fish in low water. The rain would not stop, there were times when it couldn’t have rained any harder. It was like marbles falling from the sky. We showed up to the run and began working the edge of a quick moving seam. I made a cast way up river and watched my indicator as it ticked along. Boom! The hook was set and Fish On. We all thought it was steel but when we got it ashore it was a healthy Brown Trout. We were all a little disappointed but at the same time it got us on the board. We continued to fish down hunting behind every rock and tree branch for our elusive Steelhead. All of a sudden the sky flashed red and a crackling noise from hell had us running out of the water. The storm had gotten worse and we didn’t know if the weather would allow us to finish out the day. Walking back to the cars Whippa and Headrush decided to throw in the towel. Being soaked to the bone and stiff as a board we couldn’t blame them. Jeremy and I decided to
push on. We were on a hard core mission to find steel. We drove up stream to fish some water that we had not yet tried and it paid off. I was working an inner seam of fast water when it happened, my line took off and a huge chromer came leaping out of the water. I yelled to Jeremy and the hook popped out. Next thing I knew Jeremy had one on, his reel screaming just as loud as him. Again the hook let go. This happened for over 2 hours; both of us hooked multiple steel in the 10-15lb range. They fought like a freight train, pealing line off as they tail walked across the water. All though none were landed, we still sit here and wonder about these monsters. Just before dark Jeremy landed a nice brown. We landed the fish and took a photo. Tomorrow will bring another day of nasty weather and hopefully some more nasty steel.
