I asked my father to join me for a little morning fly fishing on the Bow River south of Calgary, AB (Canada). We had spent the last few days cooped up in the house and he was glad to join me on the river. We made our way down to a favorite spot of mine and I began to slowly nymph my way down stream. I had some early success in the day, but things had been quite for about an hour. Just as I began to loose focus, I saw a quick flash about 4 feet from shore, before I could even focus on what it was my rod slammed forward and line immediately began to peel off my fly reel. I had no option but to hold tight and watch my line scream across the river. I knew it was a large fish by the way it was taking line. I slowly began to make my way down the icy banks as I was already well into my backing. I could hear my father laughing behind me wondering at what point I was going to slip into the frigid water. It wasn’t long before I was shedding some very wet clothes onto the shore. The fish began the first decent run upstream now, and I was scrambling to keep up with his sudden rush towards me. Just as I began to gain some ground, the fish darted across the river again and downstream, again taking me well into the backing. I was very determined now to land this beast and decided to make any necessary sacrifices. After about 20 min I finally had my sights on the largest Bull Trout I have ever had the

experience of fighting. With my father’s aid, we managed to land this beast and were able to get a few photos. We figure he was a solid 30 inches and about 10lbs. We decided then and there that we had just started a new family Christmas tradition.

Nice catch man, that is a beauty. I can relate to taking a "swim" in frigid water, it is no fun. It's nice that your dad could be there to share the experiance!

WOW! that is a beautiful fish..and I am envious of your christmas tradition... believe me, if that was my families christmas tradition...i would be counting the days until christmas morning.. I would gladly forgoe all of the sweaters and scarves and socks and all that stuff for one simple gift .... A HUGE BULL TROUT like that...From a fly fisherman's perspective, you have found the true meaning of christmas! welcome to fliesandfins.com
