 Naples Florida Snook: Off The Plane And Under The lights

Waking up in Maine to 3 inches of new snow and below zero temps made me anxious to arrive in Ft. Myers Florida at 11:00am. Everything was going as planned. I made my first flight with ease and then Murphy’s Law set in. We were waiting in line to de-ice the plane for and hour which then led to me missing my connecting flight to Ft. Myers. I would now not arrive until 4pm and had to stay in a terminal the size of a shoebox. I felt like Tom Hanks (The Terminal) although I didn’t have Catherine Zeta Jones as my stewardess. When I arrived my parents picked me up and we were on our way to dinner then back to their condo. I was very tired and didn’t know if I had it in me to cast for Snook under the lights in Venetian Bay. But, I seemed to catch a second wind after we ate and grabbed a fly rod when we got home. “Hey mom you want to see me hammer a Snook?” I asked. She laughed and followed me down to the dock. We were scouting around when we heard a pop on the water. A big Snook was hovering just below the surface in the light. I made a long cast to the outer ring of the light and began to strip. Boom! The battle was
on. The Snook swam right at me and then towards the pillions, keeping me on my toes. My dad made his was down and helped me land it for a quick photo and the day came to a great end. There are lots of fish in these warm Florida Bay waters and hopefully I’ll get a chance to share more of them with you over the coming weeks.

I'm very jealous that you are down there in the sunny 80 degree weather while I'm home studying my butt off...I'll be down there soon hopefully catching a snook or two myself...this year I'm fishing and NOT steering the boat for you! |
