 Southern Maine Stripers: Mangled Flies And Striper Thumbs

This morning I woke up to a strange image in the sky, I looked at it for a minute and finally realized that it was the sun. The past couple weeks up here in the Northeast has been a wash out to say the least. Our trout waters are all too high to fish so we have been fishing for Striped Bass. This is a treat for us who live in Southern Maine, all the fish are no more than 20 minutes from home and the bite always seems to be on (when the fish are in). Today I picked up Jeremy and we made our way south to some ledges he had luck at the day before. The ledges didn’t pan out so we moved to some flats at the mouth of a nearby river. After a few casts we were into some small Stripers, the current was moving out quite quickly so it was difficult to get our flies to the bottom but we had some luck. Jeremy tied into a couple decent fish towards the tail end of the tide then things slowed down. After a quick debate we made a final push to another flat north of where we were and hit it just right. We waded out over a sand bar and down a channel, the sun was creeping lower below the clouds lighting up the sky in hues of pink and red. I stripped off some line and made a long cast out into the slack tide, I let my fly sink and began to strip in three to five inch intervals. Suddenly I felt resistance and a fish was on. A good fish! He made a couple of good runs making my reel sing and my forearm burn. I brought the fish to hand and held him up in the sunlight for a quick photo. This was the biggest
Striper I have ever caught and it will certainly keep me coming back for more. After releasing the fish it seemed like every cast after that we were hooking up. The tide was pushing us back to shore so we decided to call it quits. Mangled flies and striper thumb proved for a good day. Stay tuned for more Striper action as the summer heats up.

by jeremy on June 15, 2006 http://www.ineedasimplesolution.com | | joey - good fly fishing the salty stuff with ya ... took a little getting used to -- not used to seein' ya without an indicator and nymphs on ... nice to switch it up once and awhile, especially when its out our front door and easy to do after work... glad you got a good one ... there will be many more this summer ... and then its FALL and thats when everything busts at the seams ... bait, birds, and fish as far as the eyes can see.... |

I guess it's available to us up here in upstate NY, but it requires a long drive not the 20 minutes that you have. Keep the stories, pics and hopefully video coming. |
