Fresh Water Maine Smallmouth Bass: Hot Summer Family Fun

When the hot summer weather arrives the Trout Streams and rivers get warm here in Central Maine and the Smallmouth Bass get active. Most Trout and Salmon anglers drive miles and miles North to find Trout and Salmon action. Near my home in Clinton, Maine, the Kennebec River in July and August is full of hungry Bass and the Rainbow and Brown Trout feed more at night. It feels like just when we've got good weather to go fishing, the fishing for trout dissappears and for Abby and me, being able to get away is tough because of work. My Daughter Abby is an avid fly fisher but her day job doesn't allow her to go on extended fly fishing trips with her fiance and her Dad. So, I suggested evening fly fishing for nearby Kennebec Smallies as an alternative because just going fishing together is more important than what we fish for. I happily tie crazy-looking white and red deer hair poppers in assorted colors the day or two before we go and using our 6-weights we have a ball casting and popping for these aggressive fish. I row, Robbie and Abby cast. The Bass fight is often a lot more exciting than we expect. Going fly fishing for Smallmouth and actually "targeting" them is fun. I like to see what popper color works best, or fish a Madam X or a

hopper instead. Hey, just being together fly fishing is sometimes the best fun a Dad and his daughter can have close to home on a nice summer evening.

Marshall, It is a nice option to have aggressive fish so close to home. Pound for pound I think "bronzebacks" put up a great fight. Nice to see you were able to get out with your daughter and throw some line around.

most of the time, when I teach beginners, I go for smallies because they are eager to take a fly and fun to catch. When iut is 90 degrees in JUly and August in upstate NY, I put on the bathing suit and old sneakers and whack smallies because they are eager to take a fly and fun to catch. Great story.
