Kennebec River Maine: Browns, Rainbows, Brookies, Salmon, All In A Day's Spey
Posted by greg on November 11, 2006
This is what I would call " The Grand Slam" on Maine's Kennebec River. Today, I caught at least two of each of the following: Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout, Brook Trout And Landlocked Salmon. All within a small section of water and a mere 1 hour of time. A 15 fish day landed and 2 fish that managed to hand me my hat. The water was high and fast and for that reason I had this section to myself. I walked with my Spey rod, ankle deep, along the shore and used the Spey casts that were applicable to the high water and close brush situations. The wind was downstream and gusting 15-20mph. The single Spey and the " T " cast put me in the water along the vasilating seams and pocket waters where I suspected the Trout and Salmon would be. To be honest this spot was told to me by my friend Kenny the night before. Although Kenny had not fished it before, he will fish it tomorrow. It started with short strikes and then I got into larger fish, I could not feed my line out without getting some sort of take. The Bigger fish were occassionally porposing in the middle of the river just out of my reach, I hate that. As the shadows crossed the river from a dropping sun the hook-ups came more frequent and then it was as if someone hit a light switch. The hits stopped along with the hatch of small flies about size 24 and looking like a trico. I had used a " Wood Special " a great fall fly. I have caught countless Land Locked Salmon on this fly and Brookies like it too. The walk back to the
truck was about 30 yards. 15 fish 30 yds. from the truck, a great day in Maine!

Sounds like an excellent day of fishing in Maine. Especially for this late in the season.
Looks like perfect Spey water too!
There are alot of late season opportunities here that not many folks take advantage of.
Way to keep on keeping on.
