Fresh Water Steelhead: Tough To Slow Them Down

Today there were many battles, some I lost but this one I won. The battle was underway before the drift had even begun. My line screamed out and a hot chromer ripped through the run. He tore line off my reel and it was tough to slow him down, but I finally did or so I thought. I applied some heavy side pressure and tried to angle him into the soft water but that I guess that just pissed him off. He rolled and ripped again, this time downstream and he took me with him. I began walking, then jogging and the next thing I knew I was sprinting down the river. He bucked up like a wild bull and basically beached himself on the other side of the river. He didn’t stay on dry land for long, he rolled of the grass and sliced his way through the

remainder of the run. He was heading for lake and I was reaching the end of my rope. Below me was too much fast water to even comprehend. So, it was land him here or never. So I applied side pressure and put the wood to him. Fortunately, he turned his head and I knew I had him beat.
