Salt Water Andros, Bahamas: Bonefish By Day, Sharks By Night

I just left Andros Island in the Bahamas a week ago and I am now back home, sitting at my computer and cursing my job and wishing I was there instead of being home in Denmark. Me and my two friends spent our time in the Bahamas fly fishing Bonefish furing the daytime and casting flies to feeding Sharks at night. The Bonefishing was great as always but the shark fishing at night was incredible. During the nightime hours the sharks would prowl the waters outside of Hanks Place. This is a spot in Fresh Creek where people eat and rent boats. At night when the kitchen is in full operation, the cooks throw scraps of food out from the kitchen and the sharks and Jacks prowl the waters for a tasty meal. We would wait and watch the water and be ready to cast a fly to a cruising Jack or Shark. We had so much fun casting to cruising sharks and hooked up with numerous sharks but only landed a few. The fight was unbelievable! When these sharks took and felt the hook-set, all hell would break loose. The sharks were very powerful and they would make long hard runs and jump out of the water like crazy. We realized quickly that light tackle was not going to do the trick. So, we rigged up our fly rods with 80 pound wire leaders and we through a lot of size 4/0 deceivers. Sight casting to these predators was an amazing

experience that I will not soon forget. Yes, I am going back again! I can not wait!

peter --- killer trip! ... that is what i love so much about fly fishing in tropical waters .. it is really a round-the-clock game ... day time on the flats and when night time falls everything changes and new species and opportunities exist ... and, if you can find the right spots (like you did with the restaurant and the light) .. it can still be a very visual experience ... so, many times when i have been to mexico or florida or the bahamas ... the fly fishing never really ends and the days and nights just kind of blend into each other .... great stuff! seeing, casting to and hooking those sharks must have been a wild experience ... especially on foot! i would love to give that a shot someday ...... nice work!

Way to fish!!! sharks are on my "things to do" list.
Here it's cool no sharks in lagoons so I try to figure out something to tease them for they approach the boat and throw them a flie. Ok some purist may think that "chuming" is no more fly fishing, I would love to get a taste of fighting those beast on a fly rod at any price.

Sounds like you had a ball. Sharks on fly, that's something...Haven't had a chance to hit the flats around here myself lately, but I know I wouldn't do it at night...Here in Australia, on top of sharks, we also have big lizards that like to play fetch, but don't like to hand things back...

Great story and pics! Thanks for sharing. Sharks fight like mad when they are hooked and it is quite a rush!
