 Flyfishing The Flats & Everglades From Naples To The Keys

A fishing story should have an interesting if not happy ending, this does not as it ends back in the bleak wind driven cold of Maine. That aside, I'll speak of better days, brighter Sun and tropical breezes.
From Naples Fla. to Key West in 10+ days and the fishing was good and the weather, grand. My first experience fishing in Naples was the night I arrived and Jeremy was ready to fish and so was I. We crossed the road hopped over a fence and made our way to a lighted dock. We stood back from the water as the fish are weary under the light. We could see snook, Blue Fish as well as Barracuda and lady fish. I tied on some 16 lb. for a butt section, than 8 lb. for the tippet. We were using Decievers and did not cast many times until I had a Blue Fish on. Jeremy jumped down on the rocks and retrieved the fish for me. I landed a snook or 2 and a second Blue Fish. The scene repeated itself for a couple of nights. Streamers were definitely the fly of choice in canals.
On highway 41 we caught Snook, Mangrove snapper and the occasional Aligator.

from Naples on rte. 75, using the one day of inclement weather we had to travel, to Fort Lauterdale. We met with friends there and Jeremy was catching fish in the Canal within 20 minutes. We met up with Tom and started to plan the trip to Key West. In the Keys we fished the flats along the Gulf side of the Keys that were sparsley populated and free of Flats fisherman with few exceptions. The State Parks had a lot of people throwing all manner of bait, wieght and lures. This not being our style we opted for the serenity of the Gulf side of the Keys. Streamers, decivers and crazy Charlies were the big takers in the flats. Crazy Charlies were number 1, then a Clouser, white body and tan with gold flash. We caught the usual suspects Barracuda, Mullett, Snapper and lost a good size bone fish and a Cobia, who followed until I had to stop the strip and he was gone, big fish. I was told by a friend, repeatedly that a knot is a weak point on your line, lost a big bone after he ran x2 and when I got his head up he moved quickly and snapped the line just below a knot. Lesson learned.
There were fish , great weather, lots of laughs and OH! !@#$%^&, after loosing a fish. We had fun and accomplished our goal, FISHED.

TANTOO=(n) a slight pigmentation of the skin. Usually acquired when wading tropical waters. Not to be confused with TONTO
