Saltwater Fly Fishing: A Bahamas & Florida Fly Fishing Excursion

It all started while fly fishing in sub zero temps on Colorado's Yampa River in
January. I decided to call Dave and put together and once in a lifetime salt
water fly fishing excursion. We made plans to fish for the first week of May at his bonefish
spot in the Bahamas, followed up with a couple days of Tarpon and Snook fishing in the Florida
Everglades. The time spent in Pelican Point and the everglades was so drastically
different, but bother were epic experiences. It is an opportunity every fly angler would
enjoy. Being exposed to the culture in Pelican Point on Grand Bahama was
just as satisfying as the fly fishing itself. While having very little
experience on the salt, Bernard "Pitawee" instantly tuned me into the world
renown bonefish flats of the Bahamas. Tail after tail, eat after eat while competing
with Black tip and Lemon sharks; the fly fishing in this environment was nothing a
freshwater trout boy knew existed. After three thousand bones swam towards
our flies I was lucky enough to test my skill for the most exhilarating
activity in the outdoor sport realm, Tarpon on a fly. Fortunately we were
blessed with 30mph gusts which forced us to enter the back country of the Florida
Everglades where we ran the flats boat seemingly forever, and cut our way up some
creeks that led to some ponds that were found via satellite imaging.
Needless to say the snook and tarpon master Kevin Mihailoff introduced me to the
plethora of snook in the 3-15 pound range. While stalking snook we were
continually hooking 5-20 pound baby tarpon as they worked their way
out of
the creeks with the changing tide. An incredible saltwater fly fishing experience with three knowledgeable
anglers.

I knew you'd have an unforgettable trip to south salt with dave. Bernard and Kevin are truly the finest guides I have fished with...they're both ruthlessly athletic and talented. I sure hope some of their skills rub off on me. Like you, I'll have memories lasting all my life having adventured with dave and these extraordinary guides. I hope to see you again in S.W. Florida. Best of luck this Trout season! |
