Fresh Water Steelhead: Figuring Out The Magic Combination

Steelhead Video

There are few things more satisfying than fly fishing with old friends. This weekend, instead of talking or dreaming about finding fish with friends I don't get to fish with enough, we went out in search of steelhead. We found the chrome on New York's Salmon River and found many memories that we will not soon forget. The water had dropped 10 degrees in a week’s time and the steelhead were hugging the river bottom. I tried swinging flies for 2 days and only connected with 2 steelhead. The C&D and indicator fishing was also slow for the first 2 days but Darthwader and Lauren's Legend picked away that pockets and dialed into a couple fish. On the third day, we figured out the magic combination and Darthwader and I did really well. We managed to put quite a few steelhead on the bank and lost more than we actually landed. We will be talking about this trip for quite some time and dreaming of steel until we can

all get out on the water and fly fish together again.
