Fresh Water Argentina, Patagonia: Breathtaking, Massive & Crystal Clear Water

Argentina Video

English: Patagonia is the land where dreams come true with its breathtaking mountains, massive sky, and crystal clear waters. One can still feel free from all of the madness in the world and reconnect back to the wonders of nature. All the lakes and rivers one can still drink from as they have not been spoiled by man. With that said, I once again met up with my dear friends Miguel Sanchez and Gustavo Morales to learn more about their waters. This time we met up to explore and fly fish some really untouched lakes in the providence of Chubut (central Patagonia). We had to access the lakes by four wheel drive as the roads are primarily all dirt with difficult crossings, but once arrived at you know that you are in the land of beautiful hungry trout. We prepared to ...

English: breakdown these lakes tactfully always keeping four things in mind what you are looking for:
1. Streams or small brooks that feed into the lakes.
2. Big boulders or dramatic changes in depth usually shown by the color change.
3. Steep cliffs targeting caves cut out through time.
4. Grass lines on the edges of the lake.
With these things in mind we would use floating lines in the morning generally catching rainbows on larger top water Chernobyl flies near streams, and in the afternoon use massive black and red bunny leech patterns casting towards boulders and water color changes which showed the depth changes. With sinking lines or shooting heads one must always be conscious of maintaining line control as you wait for your line to sink. Underwater currents consistently put a bow in your line which could lead to missing fish if not careful. We would work together each day learning from one another and truly enjoying every moment we got to spend with these beautiful works of nature. We found that bigger profile flies lead to many more attacks and bigger aggressive browns. I try to tie these flies with much longer tails and bigger bodies than normal, although still using single hooks and not tandem which weeds out many smaller fish. I have found that looking at underwater movement is critical when tying these flies as it helps me determine the profile. We had extremely windy weather for the most part which meant we had to fish down more than normal, therefore we would use five and six weight 10.5 rods to chuck these massive flies to the coast, but at sunset we would play a game with a four weight rod were you had three casts and your out if you did not close the deal. We managed to catch some beautiful trout and see a great variety of color differences in each fish. Here in Argentina the food and wine is just as important as the fly fishing so to make sure the fires were well attended we made an asado everyday grilling incredible cuts of Patagonia meat. Once again I thank you dearly from my heart for just incredible experience in your waters and can’t wait till the next adventure.
