Salt Water South Florida: Rolling Tarpon, Red Bulls & Jacks

Florida Video

I had been to South Florida and the upper Keys a couple times before this trip but it was before fly fishing had become a part of my life. So when Jeremy asked me if I wanted to go chase the saltwater fish down south i was excited to return and see what I was missing out on. The cold front had passed leaving high seventies and a big ball of fire (the sun) which was perfect for two fishermen flying in from the northeast. Our plan was to fish from Naples, through the Everglades, down the Keys and out to the Marqueses in just about a week. Within the first day we were casting at rolling tarpon under the eyes of the many resident alligators and hooking up to my first snook later that night. But the crystal clear waters of the Keys and the fish that feed there were calling us. The giant forked tails of bonefish and the permits' cicle fin piercing the water’s glassy surface as they rooted around for something to eat. Stingrays cruised around like gliders picking up anything that was kicked up. The barracuda and sharks had the other end of the food chain covered. Jack Crevalle swimming on the surface in unison chasing down our flies and bait busting false albacore and spanish mackerel were just offshore. And in the evenings after a little food and a Red Bull or two Jeremy and I fished various bridges throughout the keys where tarpon waited, hidden in

the shadow line. We waded where we could and fished out of everything from canoes and kayaks to ripping fast flats boats. And, in the end i think learning how to read the Florida waters and knowing what to look for in this environment was one of our greatest victories. To see all of this in one trip will make it all that much sweeter when I return and my line comes tight to my first bonefish and permit. I can't wait until my return and I hope Jeremy is right next to me with a high five and a bent rod.

that was a killer trip .. seriously dude we covered some tracks, had a ton of laughs, even more redbull, hook some awesome fish, lost a ton of fish, caught a couple fish and i'm ready to do it again whenever you are! .... like you, those permit and bonefish tails sticking out of the glassy water have a way of getting into my head .... ya man, i learned a ton that trip .. mostly, don't just bring 2 tarpon flies! with that said .. thanx to all the boys down there in south florida who helped us out and who we crossed paths with .. (marshall, mark w, Big bear and his whole crew, bonefishwhisperer etc...) .. the only thing i hate about fly fishing in south florida is that the time just goes by tooooooo fast .... seriously, it's like i wake up before sunrise down there and get on the water with sun up .. and before i know it the sun is setting .... and 4 or 5 days goes by like 4 or 5 hours! .. can't wait to get back down there ... ed, i guess any tarpon is better than no tarpon .. and for us those were awesome fish .. but, on our next trip .. the big dogs will be in town ... till then brotha!

Sweet vid boys, you covered some serious miles. Looking forward to getting down ther in a month or so. Hopefully I have just as much luck. Not to bash on the giant tarpon, but those smaller ones look like just as much fun as their huge older cohorts. Not to mention if you get a good hookset they can be landed in under an hour. Don't get me wrong I'll take whatever I can get. Whether its a 10lber or a 100lber it is all good. Sorry to ramble. Just got me jazzed up to hit the salt. Living out west has its benefits for trout but sometimes you get the urge to bust out the big gun and cast to something salty. Thanks for the boost.

Nice guys! I may be heading down in April. Looking forward to a little sun. Enough of this mess in New England.

Awesome. I love the opening tarpon into the tree jump. I was wondering when you were going to post that.

Hmm, small Tarpon is definitively is better than no Tarpon at all.
I recognized the canal where I stood with Marshall last fall.
Seeing that video brought up some good memories about the place.

Great trip and video, I especially the like the the last couple of minutes, i.e. removing the waste materials from the car. He was fortunate that you weren't tossing car parts along the road, like the visor over the passenger side window. There is always carnage.

wow- Really loved the video until you started throwing away recyclable materials, plastic six-pack rings and mono filament. Assholes like you come down here, fish it up and leave all kinds of trash for sea turtles and the lovely wading birds you like to take pictures of to get tangled in and ingest. Florida is beautiful but its barely hanging on, guys. Anglers are the type that can save it. Please don't glorify behavior like that. There's absolutely no reason to be throwing mono away....there are mono recycling dump at every boat ramp across the state.

Spoonser,

You have a lot of nerve calling Jeremy an "asshole" for doing the proper thing with his trash. We'll address this later...

I'll tell you what I hate, people that bicker and talk about problems rather than address the root of it and end it for all. Here in FL, I seem to run into this kind of person a lot. The kind of person who has enough free time on their hands to nit-pick everything they see, yet when it comes down to going out of their way to help in the solution, they concede.

There are a lot of environmental issues facing the whole world today, and monofilament recycling has got to be near the bottom. Maybe you should have called him an asshole for driving through the Keys in an SUV, since there is no doubt that they did more damage to the planet burning gas than when properly disposing of their waste in a trash can.

Here is what it boils down to:

1- you're the asshole
2- think before you speak (type)
3- Jeremy did the right thing
4- you're the asshole
5- eat my dick, douchebag

I don't believe my buddy got called an ass for throwing trash in the trash can. Its too bad when a good post gets ruined with off the wall comments. Take your complaints else where.

Re: South Florida: Rolling Tarpon, Red Bulls & Jacks
by patm on March 11, 2008
It is about time someone took you trash generating, turtle killling, wading bird strangling assholes to task. With all the content on this web site it is obvious you travel all over the world with the sole purpose of disposing of wildlife threatening trash at gas stations. My guess is you have infiltrated Mobil Exxon so the employees at these gas stations take your trash and dispose of it at the nearest water way so the turtles won't have to travel up the highway to the trash can on the pump island.
Hey Florida tree hugger... why don't you get a life. I have met and/or fished with several of the regulars on this website. They are all welcome to fish and dispose of their trash in my state. I have traveled with some of these guys and know that at the end of the trip we will need a dumpster to clean out the vehicle. This is because the make damn sure nothing is left where it would be harmful in anyway to the environment that they all enjoy.

I have fished with Jeremy for years and my truck becomes a trash can until we find an appropriate disposal site. We don't usually attract those who suffer from an inabillity to fomulate concepts or are so egocentric your unable seperate the trash and other waste materials,( emotions ), from those of others. My next obvious question, as it relates to waste, would be your experiences around potty training? as you seem somewhat phobic about waste. Most people, by the age of two, realize the necessity of socisl skills, I'm afraid for you, that ship has sailed and as there was no executor at the helm sadly but assuredly Sunk. In summery, find a good Therapist, I would suggest someone with a classical Freudian education. Thanks for talking TRASH.

As the wife of this fly fisherman, let me tell you a few things about Jeremy ...

1. Our recycle bin overflows weekly due to his efforts
2. He is a conservationist at heart donating to many environmental causes
3. His love of fish and the environments surrounding them would never be jeapordized by him
4. He created this website so that fly fishermen around the world could share their stories and meet and connect with other people who also have a passion for fly fishing and its environments.

So, in the future, I suggest you get the facts before you call someone an asshole. Use this site for what it's intended for, and by all means mention your cause or concern, but with fly fisherman respect.

Mrs. Jeremy Cameron

That comment went straight to the heart, very unnecessary these are people that keep the rivers clean so that my kids will enjoy them in the future , I think you should really look inside yourself and think before you call great people assholes. I feel sorry for you as you are channeling your anger and ignorance out to the wrong community.

Hey - Thanks TO ALL in my crew wwho backed me up ... I know one thing for sure .. I hang with quality people .. the best! They would have told me (as they often have done, if I was at fault or the jerk or whatever) ... In the end, as long as my crew and the friends I roll with are in my corner ... I'm good ... I got good friends who are all environmentally concious and concious of so many other things that there are too many too list .... So, if someone doesn't like me or the way I roll .. I got a very simple solution don't come to this website .. just like if you don't like something on TV .. change the channel .. simple

Awesome video fellas! You guys always put together a video that shows what a road trip with the boys and fishing through the keys is all about. That Great hunt after the silver king. Keep em' coming!

Re: South Florida: Rolling Tarpon, Red Bulls & Jacks
by spoonser on March 12, 2008
ah- there we are.

wow- I seem to have really pissed you guys off. Ok. So, I guess Jeremy’s a really
great guy with lots of friends and environmental ethic to boot, and I am a knee-jerk,
nit-picker that had no business saying what I did. I suppose that if I am ballsy enough
to post stuff like that, I should own up to it as well.

So I will: apologies to all for the tone and the language of my post yesterday.

I do, however continue to take exception to the final content of that video and to explain
I should have been far more tactful. What I should have said is that maybe you should
consider not videotaping the act of throwing away mono-filament in the garbage. Not
to mention receyclables or six pack rings. I think it degrades the wonderful message this
site sends.

Well Jeremy! Here I am up in the wilds of Nova Scotia on a dial up so I am not going to enter the fray over this thing as I don't have the band width.I am disturbed with the name calling though. Its' too bad the writer did'nt drop you a note intsead.I'm sure you would have answered it personally and commented publicly if necessary to readers concerns. You have always been a gentleman when I've fished with you.The question I have is were you using red bull the night we went out and you kept saying "just a few more casts" till nearly dawn"Continued best wishes to you and yours -Tom P.S. sea runs started leaving early as well as winter salmon.Been warm and relatively snowless on this end of the Island.Wish we had a Mar. opening
