Fresh Water Brook Trout: If It Looks Good, Fish It!

Maine Brook Trout I caught my first Maine Brook Trout on opening day in 39 degree water, and standing up to my knees in snow. Yesterday, it was almost 80 degrees and I caught my second Maine Brookie of the season and a couple of friends that I often fish with caught a few nice brown trout. The water temp had risen to 50 degrees in a short amount of time and the fish were moving. Not much feeding activity on top yet but the fact that the trout were taking streamers was a good sign. After a long winter, the tug from an early season Maine Brookie felt great. The fish fought hard for it was and decent size and very healthy looking. As is typical in with early spring in Maine, the hatches still are still non descript. #22 something or other, but nothing eating off the top anyway, maybe tonight that will change. I have always been a big fan of the Maine Brookie and my understanding is that some pure strains still exist in Maine. I often go in search of Brook Trout by exploring small brooks and streams in Maine that are off the beaten paths. It makes for a fun day and a nice break from the bigger and

bolder Maine rivers I often fish. In Maine, yah never know where you might find a Brook Trout. Brooks you drive over daily to get to work or pass to get to your inlaws are often holding Brook Trout? Stop the car and fish! My moto this year is if it looks good fish it.

Awesome Greg! ... Glad to see you are finding some fish and the fish are starting to move around a bit. It was definately a long winter in Maine .. but things are definately starting to thaw and I think it is going to be a spectacular season. Now, I am looking forward to my first Brook Trout of the season! Hard to explain what it is, but there is definately something about Brook Trout that makes them so cool. Maybe it is their wild colors with blue, red and yellow dotts? maybe the white and red fins? maybe their veracious apetite and predatory nature and willingness to chase down and crush big streamers ... it's most likely all of those things. Good stuff greg .. looking forward to getting out with you and taking a few casts soon.

Having caught a few brooktrout recently I can imagine that their are your favorite fish.
Beautifull looking creatures and so agressive when you tug a streamer in front of their noses.

These fish are very hard to find where I am located but when my I showed my buddies on the last trip what I had caught their response was "next time we will have to catch those brook trout"

Since I like fishing small streams it would be interesting if you could document one of your deep jungle brookie excursions in the future.

A river I drive over every day to and from work gave me a brown trout on opening day. It took me an 80 degree day to find my next trout as well, ha. Nice fish; good to see some Maine trout on the board.
