PompanoI recently took a fishing trip to Naples Florida where my long time guide from Islamorada, Fl had moved. The waters in Naples were teaming with fish and being from Tampa I told my guide Randy that I had not caught a snook in 2 years because of the deep freezes. After spending a couple hours catching small snook we decided to move onto the beach and look for tarpon. We did see a pod of large tarpon but I couldn’t seem to get in front of them to properly present the fly. While I was trying my damndest to catch one of these 100+ pound tarpon I noticed several schools of pompano swimming around the boat in every direction. I decided to turn my fly and my attention to the pompano and had a blast. These strong fighters and beautiful fish made the trip and day wonderful. After the fishing was done we took the pompano we harvested, baked them in rock salt and washed them down with a Dos Equis Amber … I don’t always like catching Pompano but when I do I pair it with Dos Equis!
