don't rule out the freshwater opportunities. If your on foot, and you overlook the ponds that are everywhere, you'll be missing out on some great fishing for bass, snook, and tarpon.

I used to own an 8wt. but I gave it away. It can be used, but if you want all around saltwater fishability, get a 9. Get as much of a reel as you can, especially for the albies as they tear ass.

If you mean "gap" by the two pieces don't push all the way together, then this is ok. Orvis rods usually wear in, and this is the way they are supposed to fit.
