The winter has not even hit yet and my plans are being made for this coming summer. As a fly fishing bum, college student as well as a fly shop rat (working weekends and breaks now that I am at school), the owner of the shop asked me if i was planning on working again this summer I told him I planed on it, HOWEVER! I plan on taking two and a half week off together and traveling somewhere in the US and fishing my heart out..... Here is where I need some help WHERE and for WHAT...
I have fished in Yellowstone and The Henrys Fork a couple of times and went for Alantics in Gaspe this past summer...
Can anyone HELP ME OUT to where I should go, I am thinking alot about going out west...

hey --- here is my 2 cents.
alaska - save that till you are out of college and have more money to do it right.
go west young man - i did a trip a couple months ago with my firend Jason that was awesome. It can be done within a fairly reasonable budget too...if you are willing to camp - eat cheap etc.. Here is what i did.
1. fly into salt lake city utah (fished select rivers in salt lake area for a day or two - awesome brown/rainbow fly fishing)
2. drove to some select spring type creeks in the mountains of utah (i promised i would not give the names away - but if you were smart enough and did your research and asked around at the right fly shops - you could find these or similar creeks) - lots of fun - crystal clear - real technical - beautiful remote scenery.
3. then drove to green river utah - if you have never been certainly worth the visit - trout everywhere - big ones, little one, cuts, bows, brown - 25-30 trout are definately a reality.
4. then go drive to wyoming - i loved the snake river and some of the spring creeks out that way.....
5. if you are in wyoming why not bounce over to grey reef - arguably one of the best tailwaters i have ever fished -- rainbows and browns - of enormous sizes and absolutely some of the most powerful trout pound for pound that i have ever encountered. (kray - who visits this site lives out there in casper and fly fishes grey reef religiously - maybe he could give you some tips - maybe even meet up to flyfish??)
- jason - and i am sure others could give you plenty more detail - but i had a blast doing that western tour ---- its so huge out there --- the choices are really limitless ---- but that worked for me and i would recommend it to anyone. hope it helps

I agree with jeremy, the areas he mentioned are great and if you are every coming to alaska and want the full wild experience you will probably need to save money. Most of best trips are at least 2000 per person and you can usually add 1 or 2 thousand more for air fare.

kodiak --- you lived in utah prior to alaska right? - did you like the green river? i was glad i went - but had mixed feelings about it --- did you ever flyfish grey reef? now i love that joint.

I did jeremy but i was so young an inexperienced i didn't know what to make of the green, i can hardly remember. I did go to greys reef but i was just watching my dad and uncle fish, think i was like 7. Most of my utah fishing was done on closer waters too us such as the weber river, provo river or strawberry resevoir and boulder mountain.
I would agree with Jeremy. I have lived in New York, Colorado and Utah. I have fished all over and extensively Utah, Idaho, Wyoming and Colorado . Utah, Wyoming and Idaho have the best fly fishing. There are still secret waters with huge fish. You still have to work for it. But there are a ton of options out here.
