Well its done - The Final Name Is SIMPLEFLY SYSTEM (if you take the words "simple" and "fly" and put them togehter you get SIMPLEFLY ... say it really quick and it sounds exactly like simplify) So the name fits perfectly because the name itself is exactly the concept behind the fly system... take two independant things and put them together to make a unified unit) ... I have a video below that kind of explains the usability and features of the Simplefly System... I also have a video of how to tie it using the tying methods of Mike Holt (I recorded mike tying both a front section and a back section using the beeded chain connector).

PS - The hook can reside on either the Top or Back section or Both ... the choices is really all up to you... and the type of fish you are targeting might play a factor in your decion.

I really hope you all like it.. And, I look forward to seeing some of the Simpleflies you create... Let me know your thoughts.. ..I plan on applying this Simplefly System to all types of flies (streamers, big bugs, dry flies, emergers, saltwater flies...) and for all types of species both fresh and salt.....It is gonna be a fun and Simple and add a new element of creativity on multiple levels to my love for fly fishing... So.. if you have an idea to apply the Simplefly System to an idea that you have (examples: clousers, egg sucking leaches, deciever, nymph, leach, popper, bunny, egg, clusster egg.......... ) I'd love to see it and use it. Keep in mind bottoms and tops could be TRADED too Very Happy ..... Anyway, as always, there are no rules ... and its really just kinda a new twist on age old things... the primary benefits are:

1. Articulation
2. Modular
3. Simplicity of changing "Top" and "Bottom" sections
4. Each piece is a seperate Simplefly
in and of itself but useless without a partner

- So if you got a pattern or tie in mind that might benefit from transforming into your own Simplefly ... Give it a shot - and let us know how it works for ya... Stay tuned for many more variations, ties and immitations from us.. as we will be doing the same and test the Simplefly System on various types of fresh and saltwater fish species and under many different situations.... thanks..

I like it. Do we have any tests on the strength? lets tie some tippets to the two sections and see how strong they are. 8lb, 12 lb 20 lb...let's put it to the test.

Also, how small can we get those chains? Can we make some articulated damselfly nymphs for ponds?

sweeet - your starting to see it... Yes - the possibilities, as i seem them, are endless and i am gonna have a blast working out the bugs and devising the system to meet the demands of various fly fishing applications -- big fish, saltwater fish, small flies, dry/dropper emerger patterns...... for me this is just the beginning --- and i am only really interested in the "CONCEPT" ... i think the flies themselves and the actual ways that the "CONCEPT" can be tailored, modified and tweaked are endles.... -- i am psyched that you are finding some interest.. ....

--- here are some links and related BEAD CHAIN answers to your questions that someone else posted on another forum about the development of the Simplefly System ----

http://www.beadchain.com/

http://www.ballchain.com/

The stuff is surprisingly strong the smallest nickel plated brass is 12 lb yb tensile strength...whatever that means? hehehehehe

interesting stuff...you can get a facetted style that might be nice for flash in a fly..or even anodized different colors like red or green...

wow I never knew how cool bead chain was!?? interesting stuff

---------------------

PS - if anyone is interested there is allot of interactivity and discussion and brainstorming on this forum -- this is the site of Mike Holt's, who has helped me with the design and tying and bring the CONCEPT to frution...

http://flyfishingonly.net/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2694

(keep in mind there are something like 1,600 reads in 4 days - 100+ posts/replies and 3 full scrollable pages of communication... Clearly if you are not interested in viewing all of that from beginning to end - you can just jump to the last page with the most recent posts)

-- SO SHAQ - LET ME KNOW YOUR THOUGHTS --- OR ANYONE ELSE FOR THAT MATTER - I WAS SURPRISED TO SEE HOW MANY ACTUAL OPTIONS THERE ARE FOR BEAD CHAIN ... VARIOUS STRENGHTS AND SIZES.. THIS WILL REALLY MAKE DEVELOPING Simpleflies FOR VARIOUS SPECIES AND PATTERNS A POSSIBILITY...

ALSO - SURPRISINGLY STRONG

Shaq - i forgot one more thing -- If you were really ffly fishing for big enough fish that you thought would BREAK the bead chain.. well then simply DON'T have a hook on the "Bottom" Simplefly -- you could either leave the hook on the top Simplefly --- or tie an extension type hook off the "Top" Simplefly so that it reaches back as far as you like....

Jason - does this now for many of his string leach - steelhead patterns and its easy to do with gel spun backing ---

Here is really what i mean -- When i tie these up for stripers.. I will NOT have a hook on the back section.. why would i? -- Stripers just inhale the fly most of the time - kinda like a suction cup --- and the ONLY effect I want to achieve is having a top Simplefly that is something like let's say a BLACk clouser - and the ability to attach, switch and combine various color teaser type tails (bottom Simplefly) to that top Simplefly...

So = In this instance i don't really care about Breakage strenght because there won't even be a hook on the Bottom Simplefly...... Same would be said for tarpon Simpleflies and Snook Simpleflies...

The BENEFIT is If I have let's say 5 top Simpleflies (with hook) and 5 Bottom Simpleflies (no hook just teasers) --- ALL different colors and pattern variations -- well then - do the MATH -- I NOW have many more flies and options and the ability to achieve various effects based on (length of bead, weight of head, material of teaser....etc.)

get it??

Sweet!! I like it guys. I think it will definelty bring fish to hand. The possibilities are endless. I have been thinking about the connector a bit, but obviously I don't own a fly shop. Laughing
So, here is my feed back:
-Probably most useful for leech and/or baitfish imitations, but I'm sure you'll figure out other designs.
-My first question was strength of the connection. But looks like you have that figured out.
-Dumbell eyes on the front will be key for some baitfish situations
-Are there any issues with the hook fouling when casting?

I think you guys pulled it together in style! This will be a great system for stripers. Not only from a color point of view, but LENGTH. Stripers can be very fussy about length of bait. This system will allow us to quickly switch it up till we find the secret.
LOVE IT

Jeremy,

Nice pattern! I see the articulation and color blending as the most important features.

Though I don't see why you'd need a stinger, when you have the hook in the back section have you had any fly fouling problems?

The articulation is great. However, the interchangeabilty is key. If you have five different tops and five different bottoms, you have the potential for twenty five patterns.

As others have stated I love the articulation. I have had very, very good success with an articulating streamer for trout. The added bonus of easily switching colors, length, weight and ?vibration make this an exciting idea. I'm glad that you looked into the tensile strength of the bead chain. I personally will need to land a few big fish on any new pattern before I totally feel comfortable with it. Great effort!!

How cool is this -- Keith Konan submitted a "Striped Bass Simplefly" ... as anyone can see - the possibilities are endless ... endless pattern combinations, sizes, ties, materials .. keiths example shows how back end could NOT have a hook OR have a hook .... really up to the creator ...

KEITH -- I KNOW FOR CERTAIN THE STRIPERS WILL HAMMER THESE FLIES ... NO DOUBT IN MY MIND... I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE SOME FISH AND MORE SUBMISSIONS OF THE SIMPLEFLY FROM YOU AND ANYONE ELSE -- SO MANY SPECIES.. SO MANY TIES.. SO MANY POSSIBILITIES... KEEP IT SIMPLE Very Happy

I was really impressed with the articulation on the fly in the video. Obviously, that is a plus. I too was wondering about smaller applications and how the chain clasp (?) would affect the size / presentation of the fly. Is it going to cause flies to sink faster or farther than normal?
Also, if we don't tie, how can we get some things to test? Are you ok with us having other people tie these? My applications here would be different from yours. Overall, what is the plan for going forward with this?

Congrats on a really innovative system. I think you are really onto something here.

I was planning on tyeing some big bunny leeches and such for a trip to Quebec in June where I'll be fly fishing for northern pike. I will be sure to give your new concept a try.

Hi
Was not really sure about this system till I saw the action of the leech in the clip, going to try some with a wiggle fin on the front.
Borderline plug maybe but id love to see the action that could be achieved.
Are any tips on tying posted anywhere?
Well done Colin

Here's a pattern to add to the Simplefly archives. Tied by Salty over on the Drake Forum....it crys out for eyes and to be fished at the Moose River or at EO over Salmon feeding in the dam outflow on stunned smelt. The clip can be hidden under the front...but I'd stuff foam in both sections of tubing....

I like the Marabou tail .....Stripers, or ANY salt fish should jump on it.
