Has anybody fished the Ausable river (west Branch) outside of Saranac Lake? Hopefully, I will be there the weekend of June 3rd and I was wondering if anybody knows of any good holes. It is supposed to be the best trout fishing in the East. Any info would help.
Thanks,
John

The ausable can be very good in spots. I like to fish the out of the way spots under wilmington and below the C&R area. You should be into heavy March Browns by then and maybe the start of the green drakes. The best in the east is a tall order. If you like tumbling mountain river fishing over holdovers and stockies then it may be that, at it's best. Don't overlook the Saranac itself to the north and the salmon, a bit farther north. They can rival the trout fishing on the ausable on any given day. I still think the best fishing in the east is the Delaware hands down evenj though my best day on the Ausable and my best day on the D are indistinguishable from looking at the photo album.

Thanks for the advice. I will try and hit Saranac on my way home. I stocked up on March browns and caddis flies after fishing the salmon river in Pulaski. It seems that is all that they were hitting. I caught quite a few browns and small salmon and actually quite a few rainbows as well. Too bad it was down pouring the whole time and my cousin fell into the river while crossing it!! I wish I could have taken a picture!! Do we have any rivers around there that hold landlocked salmon? I would love to hook into them. Thanks again for the advice.
