I'm moving to New Zealand in a couple of months, specifically Christchurch in the south island.
Anyone any tips for me?
I just got a new St Croix Legend Ultra 5 weight. Is it up to the job?
I also have a Redington wayfarer 7 weight. |

first let me say - You lucky Dog! Going on a trip is one thing - but MOVING there - now your really making me jealous. Hope you can find internet connectivity over there and post some "fishtales" on fliesandfins.com - that would be great. i can only imagine the fly fishing adventures you will have.
SO TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION:
I did alot of research on where you will be fishing. Seems like there are Big Rainbows and Big Browns and Pacific Salmon Fly Fishing.
Seems like you should be good to start with a 5 and 7 weight - test it out see what happens. See what kind of rivers you will be fishing. If they are big rivers with lots of wind at times - you might want to consider and 8 or 9 weight - it all depends on what you will be doing. So see what you getting into before purchasing. I would probably make sure, before i went, that i had a good REEL. A large arbor might be nice for those kind of fish and conditions. Obviously, I like ORVIS and use their products - but whatever gear you like you should look for these type qualities and characteristics.

Firstly let me say that I'm based in the UK. I currently fish small to medium still waters and some small rivers. My small still waters are usually fished with a 5 weight, esp if I'm fishing small nymphs or dries. On the larger waters I tend to shift up to 7 weights. I have a 10 foot St Croix for pulling traditional wets and the redington to fish buzzers.
My five weight reel is a Shimano Ultegra, which you know in the USa as the Loomis adventure. A fantastic reel with a drag to stop an elephant.
Basically I plan to be in NZ by April. Since the main fly season is opposite to the northern hemisphere this gives me a few months to get settled. I plan to make a weekly or fortnightly trip out to the rivers if they are close enough maybe more frequently. Here in the UK my fav water is only 10 mins drive away.
We're moving for a lifestyle change and I've a job aligned up to pay for my piscatorial habit. |

wow - sounds great - keep in touch - would love to hear about the flyfishing in New Zealand - in fact would love to hear about the fly fishing over in the uk - got any pics - got a good story? - you should submit a fishtale - heck you might win a new mid arbor reel - would love to hear about the fly fishing over there.
