Anglers,

I am a relative newcomer to the F&F site, so excuse this post if it is redundant or my question is answered somewhere else on the site: I am a guide in Vail, Colorado, but go to college in New Haven, CT. I was wondering if anyone knew of some good fishing places in Connecticut--I simply didn't have the time during the last schoolyear to investigate, although I would love to get out on the weekends this year. If anyone knows of any spots or rivers or anything, let me know--I would greatly appreciate it.

And if anyone needs good spots to go in Colorado, let me know, as well.

Hey Sam whats going on? Are you a yale guy? I have yet to go (but i am going next week) to the Housatonic River in western Ct that flows out into the long island sound along the southern coast...also the Connecticut river, i hear, is a pretty good fishery as well. but i think the Housatonic is THE spot in CT. hope this helps a little.

Sam:

Some spots......

Trout:

The Upper Housantonic in Cornwall Bridge area
The Farmington River in New Hartford area

Stripers/Blues/Etc.....

Many many places to go.....The Lower Housatonic River in the Stratford area is good, Sherwood Island state park is great for lots of different types of structure.....Penfield Reef in Fairfield is great (near Fairfield U off campus housing), tough parking but fishing can be fantastic and you see lots of sights around Wink There are many other places to go also....when you get out here, try getting to a Borders Bookstore or something like that and look for:

* "Striper Hotspots": Daigneault
* Trout streams of Southern New England: Fuller
* Flyrodding the Coast: Mitchell

These are just a few of the books that can point you to some specific areas....

Good luck....
John

John and Ian -- thanks very much for all that great information. I am indeed a Yale man, and I am already missing my Colorado trout rivers out here in New Haven (it has been raining for nearly a week I think.) John, I'll go pick up those books in our Barnes and Noble--they look perfect, thanks!

Thanks again for the info, those places should keep me busy for the first semester at least Smile

I'll report back to you guys if I have some good success.

Tight lines,
Sam

Hey Sam,

I'm another Yale angler (F&ES grad program)- was also around CT last year, but didn't get out nearly enough and am hoping to remedy that this year. I'm also from out west (Montana) and spent most of the summer in Jackson, WY - so have recently reignited my my addiction and am looking for a fix to ease my withdrawl.

For freshwater - the Farmington and the upper Housatonic are certainly the most well-known rivers. Have also fished the Salmon River near Colchester. For something a little closer to home - the Mill River in and around Sleeping Giant in Hamden is not the most exciting place to fish, but it's 15 minutes away and heavily stocked...

Also closer to New Haven - have heard about trout in the Muddy River (North Haven/Wallingford), Farm River (East Haven - sea run browns?), upper Quinnipiac (Cheshire), and the Hammonasset (Madison/Clinton). Am also very curious about the Naugatuck. Haven't checked any of these out yet but am game as soon as the rains abate and the runoff clears.

Saltwater - have very little experience, but am interested and considering trading in one of my 5 wts for an 8/9 wt - the striper and bluefish action is supposed to be pretty good...

Guys,

Thanks very much for all of the great tips and information--I am really excited to fish some new water, and now not nearly as depressed that I have to be at school.

Thanks again--and if you ever need some spots to go to in Colorado, let me know!

Sam
