Fly Fishing

So I'm on Monomoy with my old man this past weekend, big schools of blues are practically beaching themselves chasing bait on shore. I bought some toothy critter wire leaders from Orvis just for days like this but I have a problem. Let me preface by saying that I've basically just started to fly fish this summer and I'm learning on the "fly". Anyway, I realized that I have no idea how I'm suppose to attach the fly to the wire. Embarassed

There is a loop at the end of the wire but I'm clueless...do you use heavy mono tied to the fly and then to the wire Question

The alternative would be to just skip the wire all together in favor of heavy mono....right?? I don't know, I've read conflicting advice regarding the best approach when rigging a fly for blues. What do you guys use?

Supposedly you can tie any standard knot with that Orvis steel leader material. If the improved clinch doesn't tie nice try a uniknot or a palomar knot. The palomar might be the best bet if wrapping the leader around itself, like in a clinch knot, is a problem. Just do a search online for those two knots and there should be a site with diagrams on tying them.

i sent a friend an email about your question ... here is the response

"He should slide the nylon sleeve down below the loop, untwist the wire,
slide the fly on, and then twist the wire back together. After the wire
is twsited back to the original place he slides the sleeve back onto the
wire twists. The fly stays attached on the loop, which gives it better
action. "

I prefer 50lbs flouro, Never a break off and isnt very visible. Just like a foot or so at the end of a regular leader works great, a little pain to tie a knot in to the fly but not so bad. And you can just surgeon knot it to your leader

Just get your hands on some SURFLON WIRE! The stuff is great it is made up of nylon coated wire..... You can just use it in place of how you attach your tippet....

Then you dont have to try tying knots in heavy mono....

Give it a try.....

hi -- bluefish flies .. basically anything white and cheap:) .. typically the bluefish swim in schools and eat viraciously .. chomping at anything in their path ... (sometimes this is not the case .. but in general it is) ... so, finding them is the game ... once you find them .. you would have to throw something REALLY REALLY bad for them not to take ... again, this is just a general rule of thumb .. but basically any white deciever or somethng like that will do ..

ps.. i see your from cape town -- south africa ... what kind of species of fish do you primarily target in your home waters .. would love to make a trip to your neck of the woods at some point in my life ... welcome to fliesandfins.com.

thanks Jeremy, well the fish species here in Cape Town is limited compaired to Durban due to the cold water. I personally have landed the following saltwater species landed such as blue fish, garrick, mullet and some other local species(small stuff). This season I want to land a Cob and Yellowtail (albacor). The one trent that has started in Cape Town is the guys are going after BIG yellowfin tuna on fly. We are talking of fish above the 60kg mark. I was on a charted boat when the one flyfisher fought this fish (40-50 kg) for 3hours before it broke off at the boat.

On the freshwater stuff we fish for wild trout on small streams on 3wt rods and below.
