| Was in the freezing cold of the NC mountains last weekend and am heading to the other end of the state this weekend to stalk some stripers. I was looking for the "secret trout weapon" on my last post and am now looking for the "secret striper weapon" on this one. I mainly use clousers and half and halfs but am looking for the out of the ordinary. Any suggestions? |

I suggest you check out the posting here:

It has a lot of suggestions given to me by some Flies and Fins guys that are pretty much in the know about Catching Stripers. Note that I, too, am in search of Stripers. I had hoped that much of what I asked and was answered would be helpful for others in my situation.
Please dig deeper into the Saltwater Archives, too, since there is a lot of information to be gleaned from the compiled assemblage of all that is there. If you are not successful, there is always vicarious striper fishing via the Archived Saltwater Fishtales and videos, too!
There are still some scanty reports of stripers here in the New Jersey - Long Island area. So, I suspect that stripers are present down there in the Carolinas. Jeremy even caught a small "schoolie" fairly recently up in Maine! Good luck!

I dont know if I would use scanty to describe the Striper run as of now. For the last week or so birds have been bombing the surf and the water has been boiling from Sandy Hook all the way down 31 to LBI. They(blues and bass) have generally been in the wash at first light and before dark. During the day what little boats that have yet to be winterized are slaying the fish.

If the fish are on baby bunker, often called P-Nuts, fish an Enrico Fly in Grey over White. A Tabory Slab fly, a White Snake fly, or a White Gurgler might also work.
If the fish are on Sand Eel's fish a Chartreuse over White or all White Jiggy fly. Sparse is best.
If the fish are on Spearing, Silversides, or Anchovy fish a Olive over White Surf Candy. |
