Fly Fishing

Tomorrow morning I am going fishing instead of working and this time I have selected a river where the fish are bigger than the rats in my last report.

Temps have plummeted from warm spring to cool with close to freezing night temps.
Since the river houses monster fish I will pack a 6-weight and an 8-weight rod.
Plan A is to fish with nymphs close to the bottom.

If plan A fails the big rod will come out armed with a Teeny TS350.
I have never fished a river with sinking lines and streamers so I am in need of some tips how to fish.
So please respond regular dredgers so I might catch some fish tomorrow.
Will report how it went.

Hola Marcel,

It's good advice to cast upstream when you're fishing baitfish imitations. Fleeing baitfish always escape running with the current and this movement will often trigger a big fish to chase. You should definately try stripping your fly rapidly downstream. Most beginning streamer fishermen always fish down and accross and altho this tactic can work, it's not as effective at moving bigger fish. If the water is high, fish the edges of the banks. Thanks Marsh, I had a mixed day today with highs and lows.

The high point was a 20 inch brook trout which took a Czech nymph when I was fishing a deep pool.
It was a massive fish that was quite a handfull to land.

The low point was that my compact camera fell into the water when I slipped so hence no picture of the magnificent brook trout.

Now I missed your message about streamer fishing but I did put it to use because your advice was the same as that from the tackleshop I visited while on the scene.
So I tied on a small white zonker in the afternoon and fished it upstream in dead drift with at times a small twitch.
In a short timespan I got two hits before I finally hooked a fish.
Fish nr. 2 was again a brook trout, this time a smaller specimen of 12 inches.

The area I fished lagged three to four weeks behind naturewise to the area where I live so the river was pretty dead.
We suspected that most fish where still hibernating in the deep pools.
In the afternoon I spotted a stationary fish in the inflow of a small hydropower plant and drifted the zonker past that fish.
The fish followed a few times but did not attack the fly.

At the end of the day I had one broken camera and two brook trout to show for.
My buddy had left his camera at home because he thought that such a device would prevent him from catching fish.
His superstition theory did not work this time though because he blanked.

So a day ended with mixed feelings, still it is always better than working Very Happy

A day of dry air and some excessive force on the lens of my camera
did a small wonder.
The device seems to be in full working order again, I guess I will have to
make some test shots to see if all is well.
