Fly Fishing

Ok, it's finally spring up here in Maine. The water is high, mud season is getting into full swing, the peepers are starting, and with any luck the ice will be off some of the bigger lakes in the next two weeks. Something tells me now is the time to chase lake trout with a fly. I've never tried chasing lakers with a flyrod before and am hoping to cross them off my list this spring. Any suggestions on what to use and when? Water temps are hovering in the mid 30's still (I know- I went for a swim in my waders chasing salmon at GLS on Thursday). Things have been off to a slow start, but with warmer weather here this week, I'm hoping things will pick up soon.

While I dont know much about how the lakers respond in Maine Lakes. Here in NY they can be caught for about the next month before they move to deeper waters. I fish for them at the mouth of the Niagara River by Lake Ontario. They usually are around 15-60 feet of water. So basically we cruise around in a boat and try to hover around the 15-20 foot ledges. Using a 350 grain sinking line gets down to that depth. Most other anglers troll for them...and almost always we are the only ones fly fishing for them, and people look at us like we are ridiculous. However a 20lb laker on the fly is a great rush. Obviously the best imitation of their natural baitfish seems to be the best for out here. Good Luck!
