Last week I was on the road with the chairman of our fly-fishing trip Tom for our annual spring
seatrout trip to Fyn Island in Denmark.
Despite adverse weather, strong winds and algae bloom we have had a successful trip

Day 1 – 19th of April 2007

We left the Netherlands at 05.00 hrs. in the general direction of Denmark.
All went pretty well until we arrived near Hamburg and ended up in a traffic jam
in front of the tunnel under the Elbe river.
This delay would cost us valuable fishing time later on.
After an hour or so we finally cleared the tunnel end headed for the German/Danish border,
Our first stop would be at Kolding Fjord so we could do a little fishing before heading
to the island.

The coast of Jutland.

A strong cold westerly wind made fishing pretty tough to say the least.
We choose to fish a bay in hope that the shallower water would be higher
in temperature than the surrounding sea.
The bottom inside the bay was a little soft as Tom soon discovered.
For a moment I though he would disappear for ever in the muck but
luckily he managed to free himself (with no loss of his wading boots).
We did not spot any fish activity but the seaweed on the beach shore
teemed with shrimp.

The conditions where just not favourable enough to stay on that spot for longer so we drove onto the Island
and picked up the keys for our cottage home in the town of Assens.
After a break we unloaded our gear at our cottage and pondered over where to fish in the afternoon.
We picked a spot from the map and ended up at a series of cliffs that sheltered us from the strong wind.

Weather changing by the minute.

The water was pretty murky due to algae bloom and stirred up sand by the strong winds.
A sign of hope came in the form of a jumping seatrout in front of me, just as I was tying on another
fly.
With the knowledge that fish where present I eventually probed the water in front of me and had one
hesitant bite.

Cowslip on the cliff.

Tom also saw fish jump and had a take which he could not convert into a solid hook-up.
Near sunset we called it a day and went to the cottage for dinner.
Day one yielded no fish but it was by all means better than working.
