thinkng about heading out to the salt soon. Anyone been out for stripers recently?

Hi Mardog123,

I went out (Cape Elizabeth) for a couple hours today. No luck, and mostly I was out to get the feel of my new equipment. I'm a complete novice, and was just dying to get out and throw my virgin fly line in the ocean and get the feel of it. My technique is awful, and my arm is about to fall off after 2-3 hours! It was great to be out tho, and I did manage to start getting some casts to actually go out 40-50 feet I certainly do NOT understand the double-haul and how it can be that folks get 60 ft. casts without false casting. But I will learn by doing. Didn't catch a thing. Also didn't hook myself or get swept into the sea...so a relative success Rolling Eyes

Goshhawker, your best bet would be to hook up with another fisherman to learn the double haul.
Jeremy has one of the finest casts I've seen in some time. I bet he'd help you out. Heck, if you can stand watching a lefty do it I'll teach you. Casting a fly rod is like playing good pool or golf. You only get better with much practice.
I've got a couple more weekends of work to do on the Whaler. In that time span the Stripers will have arrived here in decent catchable numbers.
You, Jeremy, and myself should hook up for a day on the water from the Whaler. I'll drive you two fish. Ask Jer, you won't be disapointed.
Next fall you can take me out for a day of Falconry. I'll leave the Remington at home and bring a camera instead.

Linesidesonthefly-- THANKS! that would be fantastic! I' d be totally up for it. Just get in touch when you are done working on the whaler. I'd be happy to have you out for some hawking as well! I'll be getting a new bird in the fall, and it will take a while to get her going, but it will be fun. Thanks for the invite. I really look forward to it.
