Hi Guys ,

im thinking of buying a reel for a #10weigt. ( for flyfishing for northern Pike in my own country , and one day i will fish the tropics again..)

any tips for a good reel ?

Thinking about the Lamson Lite Speed 4 , our one of the "dutch reels" (www.dutchreels.com) , any other brands that i should check out ?

Danielsson LW 8 twelve is very reasonable , they are about half the price that Loop charged for them ,never heard a bad word about his reels.

The Danielsson is a cool reel I use them for trout fishing, but if you want a reliable low maitnence reel that also can take a beating in the tropics I would choose Tibor or Abel.I have had mine for eight years and it is still stopping wery large fish.. Smile

In My opinion you should keep away from the bauer reels, I dont find them very reliable..But that is just me Smile

If I would fish more often for big tropical fish I would get a Tibor for sure.
I must say I liked the Fin-Nor Ahab reels of the guide I fished with for False Albacore also a lot.

Being Dutch I was using a ATH Mach reel then and soon found out that the drag was not up to the job.
Better to spend a few extra bucks for a proven design.

I've got a Lamson Litespeed on my 10wt and I love it. Sealed drag and smooth as butter. It's light and picks up line well. You can't go wrong with it.

I would go with a Tibor its a proven design. Mine still works flawlessly after years of use. A little heavy though.

I went on a bluefin tuna fly fishing trip last august with tom rosenbauer of the orvis company and pete mcdonald of boating magazine ... he wanted to use the trip as an opportunity to "test" the new zero gravity rods and mach large arbor reels ... we were lucky in the sense that the fishing was some of the best ever with bluefin tuna on top and many hook ups .. that resulted in screaming reels and bent rods ... anyway, i am partial to the orvis brand .. for a couple reasons ... they have been in the fly fishing business since the 1800's ... they have great customer service and guarantees ... chances are they won't be out of business in 10 years like so many other niche rod and reel companies have done ... they have a great online presence backed up by a global network of their own retail stores plus full line and partial line dealers ... and, many of my good friends work for the company and put their hearts and souls into the orvis name ... additionally, orvis is the biggest fly fishing company in the world and their efforts .. such in conservation, that sometimes go unnoticed, such as 10 million dollars to protect our waters and fish is very impressive .... so, i am not the kind of guy to get in debates about what equipment is better than another .... i am just simply giving my 2 cents ... and if you are looking for a reel .. that can handle big fish, from a company you can trust and a company that has been around for 15o years, stands by its products and is very afforddably priced .. you might consider orvis products .. and in this instance "the orvis mach reel" .... as tom rosenabauer often says to me ... "the proof is in the pudding" .. well on our bluefin trip .. he proved that the mach reel is just fine for my needs (fishing wise and budget wise) .... here are some related links to the product and product video on orvis.com and the flies and fins video and story that we did from that trip

Thanks for all your comments guys. It's difficult , everyone has another story about their favorits. Heard a lot of good and bad stories about the Litespeed and the same about the Orvis Mach Large Arbor....

think it's going to be the Bauer... ( in a splash blue color..)

seabass ... good luck with it .. hope you get some nice fish ... i think its cool that flies and fins has all sorts of fly fishermen from different parts of the world, who fish for different species and who prefer all different gear and manufacturers etc... .... and, like anything else .. it comes down to personal preference .. but, it's cool that on this site ... everyone gives their honest and non-biased insight into rod, reels, waders etc as they relate to all sorts of products and manufacturers ... and, collectively, all of that feedback and information and recommendations from fly fisherman who actually use all of this different gear in different pars of the world .... enables someone to make a more knowledgable and informed decision .... so, just glad that this site worked as a research device for you ... ..... good luck with the bauer reel .. let us know how it pans out .

The cool thing about this place is that you have heard a lot of different opinions before You buy as Jeremy said. But if you buy a reel it should satisfy YOU that is what is importent.. Good luck with the Bauer reel I hope you will enjoy it. Smile
