I stopped by a friends (who doesn't fish) house who mentioned to me his nieghbor is "catching carp or something, on a fly?". Without any hestitation I remembered I had to urgently leave. I was thinking it was too early in the year but then after reviewing a journal they were right on time. Carp in this area fortunately live in very nice places unlike alot of areas. If you guys haven't fished them you should give it a go...they are big strong fish and will get into your backing in a hurry. I threw together a quick vid from yesterdays activities.

Thats great colehatch. The area reminds me of some of the beaches on Lake Erie that I fish for carp on. Were you fishing one of the great lakes? If you could send me a PM with some info on flies and tips that would be great. And nice video too.

Mike

Steelie - I'm up in NW MI (on L. MI) and this area has been spot shadowed pretty hard for carp. There have been a few spreads in the more popular flyfishing mags over the last few years. Great thing is most people still don't care about fishing them. When I was out yesterday and had thousands of them all to myself. For the most part anywhere around here this time of year in the flats will find fish hanging in them. I concentrate my efforts around the two bays we have near us in Traverse City. As far as flies go I pretty much stick to small light colored crayfish patterns...something that matches the color of the bottom. If you want to talk more about it shoot me a PM.

Jinxed - I fish carp on an 8wt. After steelhead and salmon fishing for the last 8 months it's always nice to put the 8wt on the shelf for awhile but it comes right back out when these guys show up. That's one of the reason I look forward to trout is using a light stick like a 2wt or 5wt for awhile. With the size of these fish I probably wouldn't use anything much smaller that a 7wt.

I mostly stick with small crayfish patterns...something with some lead eyes and rubber legs. Eyes for the weight and rubber legs because it becomes noticable with just the slightest strip....has good movement. Color wise I stick with something that matches the bottom of where ever I'm fishing. Guys I talk with have had pretty good luck on small buggers too.
