Fly Fishing

I'm headed to out to cape this weekend staying in Orleans and plan to flyfish for stripers. I have never fishing this area before and was looking for some guidance. Can anyone here recommend some do it yourself flats areas to try? I'd like to try monomoy if its fishing. Any recommendations or tips would be appreciated.

Call the rip ryder out of chatham. The captain will take you out to Monomoy for $15 at like 8am and pick you up whenever you want. Fish the incoming tide from 1/2 up to high and down to 1/2 low again so look for tide charts for the area. Also look for a tide that will be in the middle of a sunny day for maximum site fishing oppurtunities. Also, at dead low, you can wade to the end of the flats and blind cast into the channels. You won't see the fish on the flats until 1/2 high but there is no mistaking the fish on the flats once they leave the deep. Best line is a full clear intermediate. LEave the clousers in the box and use the non-weighted patterns. Lead eyes can spook the stripers in skinny water. FOr non-monomoy opps., try to get out towards Nauset and beyond. In towards the mainland may be getting warm for bass. Nauset is a long walk to the east from nauset beach about 1 1/2 miles down the beach for the productive fishing. Brewster has some nice flats but parking is very limited. If the water is warmer than 70, move on. There is no spot on the cape farther than 1 1/2 hours from where you are at the moment. find water in the 60's and you will find the bass. Call the Goose Hummock sport shop for up to date info.

wow, that is some solid info that shaq gave .. good stuff .. the only thing i might add based on my recent experience is ... bring some crab flies and SMALL clousers (olive and white) ... just walk the flats and look for the "highways" that the fish travel to get from here to there ... so get yourself positioned on a high point of a sand bar and look in all directions for BIG dark spots that move Smile

... i also noticed that the fish were rarely solo ... and many times in pods of 2-5 fish .... good luck ... and don't stand in 1 spot too long .. move and find the "highways" ...

Always being on the move is good but move slow like you would be "Still Hunting" an oak stand for whitetails. When you get to a likely spot, stand still for a few minutes and then a few small steps, stand still again for a few. keep[ looking all around you, the fish can appear out of nowhere.
