At that price you should have no problem finding a starter outfit. Orvis clearwater rods are good rods in that price range, they are mostly mid flex and that is good for a starter. Put a little more money into the reel say a large arbor battenkill, and you should still have some money left over for a wonderline. I would say 5wt would be a good all around size, in a 8-9' depending on the size streams you fish. Can't wait to see the pics, have fun. Don't forget to look on e-bay, or other fishing sites that have auctions, you could really get a nice used set-up in that price range.

I would recommend stepping up a bit and going with the Sage Launch combo for around $350. Comes with a 590-4 Sage Launch with lifetime warranty, 1650 Sage large arbor reel, Rio fly line and leader, and cordura rod/reel case.

You can also put together your own set up. Another good choice would be a 905-4 Scott V2 With a Ross Flywater 2 and S.A. Headstart fly line. The Scott has the same lifetime warranty and the setup would run around $340. You could step down to the Ross Flycast and save about $35.

9ft 5 weight is the go to all around setup.

I am still fishing with my first 5 wt. setup and I have a St. Croix Avid 9ft. 5wt. along with a Ross Flywater reel. The rod has a lifetime warranty and St. Croix has great customer service. The reel is really smooth for the price. I found it on sale for $50 and the rod was around $240. It's a great starter setup in my opinion. Send me a pm if your interessterd on some more details.

Mike
