hey just a little plug for one of my best buds, great fly fisherman, fellow steelhead addict and steelhead guide (fly fishing only) ... dave severson (aka waterwhippa) ..... dave is such a class act that it's just not in his nature to even mention his guiding service .... but with the steelhead season just getting underway, i wanted to give him a shout out .. and let people know about dave ... here is why i like his guide style ..

1. very low key and mellow
2. only fly fishes
3. born and raised in great lakes region .. been fishing for steelhead since he was a kid ... knows more water than i can even imagine .. in all sorts of regions
4. don't let "salmon river" specialists fool ya .. yes, he fishes the salmon alot .. why wouldn't he .. it's arguably the best steelhead river on the east coast .. big fish, big numbers and a true steelhead river ... but, the smaller tribs and "other" rivers/creeks that he knows are many .. and he knows when to fish them (which is key)
5. cool guy to hang out and fish with
6. wants to get you into fish, probably more than you do
7. ties all flies for you
8. a great teacher
9. VERY VERY light on the weight/lead, if any .. fishes indicator setup and swings flies
10 . very affordable

HERE is who I think might benefit from a day or two with dave:

1. people who are tired of the "few" spots they know on the river
2. people who are tired of fishing running line with a ton of lead, getting hung up all the time on bottom etc.. and want to try something new
3. people who have never caught a steelhead or never been steelhead fishing (but know how to fly fish reasonably well) dave is probably not your best choice if you have never fly fished ... but, if you can cast fairly well and have a passion for fly fishing and really truly want to catch steelhead .. dave might be a good option
4. people who have salmon fished with fly rod .. but never steelhead fished
5. people who know that there is "something" they are missing ... but don't know what? they go to salmon river area year after year with and have tried thousands of flies, lots of different setups and the typical runs and pools ... but something still isn't clicking ... and they know there is "something" that's not clicking????

check out dave's website and forum ... see ya over there ..

I am one of the lucky ones that has had the opportunity to fish with Dave. He is the complete package when it comes to knowledge and tactics and skill for steelhead fishing. I spent a couple of days with Dave and Jeremy on the Salmon River and then a day of hitting Daves favorite trib. One of the best 3 day fishing experiences ever. I am a novice flyfisher that was given the opportunity to catch and release some awesome fish due to Daves knowledge. Dave said to me when I left " you are welcome in my camp anytime." Well, I have to say to anyone looking for a fulfilling steelhead experience, try Dave's camp. He will help you get it done and you will never find a better person to get it done with.
Hope rain comes your way soon Dave and the rivers fill with steel. I am hoping for a Novemember trip.

Dave Rocks. I'll be there in Nov High or Low Water. Either way Whip will know where they are and we will rip lips.

Very good points Jeremy. I do want to add that even experienced fly fisherman can benefit from a local guide and whip is one of the best. I have hired guides for fishing new water or just wanting to learn a little more. Poeple tend to think of a guides services as a one time deal, but whip is one of those guides who provides information that you can use forever, and not just in your steelhead/salmon fishing either. Well worth it!

Hi everyone! I just wanted you let all of you know how much of a great guy dave severson actually is. Like jeremy said before, he is a true class act. For me, when i first met dave, it was almost infact a guided trip. He gave me the flies and the drifts that i needed to fish in order to catch my first steelhead. He stood by my side and didn't fish until i had hooked up. With his guidance, he told me where to place my drifts and how much weight i needed to put on my leader for the drift. So.....even though i didn't pay, i felt as though dave was commited to getting me my first fish that morning. The link to that article is http://www.fliesandfins.com/article500.html and dave is in the picture for a reason. Dave is very low key, but is also intent on getting his clients hooked up. When we travell all the way from maine to the salmon river, it is so nice to be greeted with the same hospitality by dave as if we were home.
The rain will come! and trust me a guided trip with dave would give you a great day on the water

Thanks for all the kind words guys, it has been a pleasure fishing with all of you. Looking forward to another great season of ice in the guides and lightning on the business end. Lastly, I want to thank Jeremy for creating this site and bridging the gap between the virtual realm and the physical world

Dave is a great fisherman and has his thumb on the pulse of the GL runs. Nobody works harder to get his clients into fish! I know my trips usually start with a glance at his site or a call to him to find out the latest! Good Luck Whip!

Dave,

Just wanted to thank you for a great day......you are knowledgable, patient, a great conversationalist and worked your tail off. The day was a success on all accounts. Thanks again and I will definitely be in touch. I am on my way out to find a fly line that stands up to Chota studs and does not break on a hot steelhead !

Take care and Happy Holidays !
John
