I have a 5/6 weight rod. Is it generally better, when buying floating line, to buy the higher or lower of the weights. I am still a "rookie" at the sport, so I am looking for the easiest and smoothest cast with my weight rod. Thanks for your opinions.

"rookie", may want to go with the 6. It will load the rod easier than the 5.

Hi!
When rods are "doubleclassed" the lower class is referred to as double taper weight, and the higher class is weight forward class. I would recommend you to buy a WF line to your rod since you are new in the game, ask for a line with a head that isnīt too long since it is easier to handle. Buy a no. 6 line.

Sweet water and light laughter, until next...

Personally use the weight of a rod as a begining to find the proper line for the type of fishing I use it for. Have found that "same weight lines" differ from manufacturer to another.

If you have a local fly shop that has a casting pond would be best as they will let you try before you buy. I "over line" my St Croix and Sage, one size under on an old Black Diamond and my #7 Scott uses a #7. You generaly will get hat you pay for in a line but there exceptions. I use a 3 weight cabelas line on a 6' 6" 3 weight rod and it casts very well.
