| The Drake and this is fly are definitely great sites. I visit www.reel-time.com and www.stripersonline.com a lot, too. Stripersonline has a great fly tying forum. Some guys there post some very cool looking flatwings. |

| being from the northeast and it being winter now .. i think i forgot about reel-time ... but when saltwater kicks in ... reeltime is definately up there on top of my daily list .. that is a great site with a huge presence for saltwater fly fishing ..... will check stripers online ... have never visited it .. |

Ok .. forget about top 3 ... what are some other sites you check regularly ... or, let's say, go to for one reason or another .. the list of mine is so long ... it is too much to even falthom ... so, i will just rattle of a list .. i am sure i will forget plenty .. and i'll add them later, if i think of them .. but here is list one .. of the top of my head ..

So, I have a question .. considering that you are from alaska and obviously more knowledgable and connected to the fly fishing scene than just a guy like me who might go there on a couple trips or whatever .. is this a site that is well received by alaskans. My question is this .. It is tough these days to find sites for any region of the world that are not almost entirely driven by "alterior motives" and very biased opinions .. meaning it can be tough to wead through all of the alaska sites that are run by let's say 1 guide or 1 lodge. Don't get me wrong, many times those are valuable .. and every site has some sort of commercial reasons for being alive .. but, some are more conducive to interaction and a variety of opoinions rather than just a lodge trying to get heads in beds or a guide trying to fill the calendar with trips ... so, it would be cool as this post matures and evolves to find the sites within various regions of the world that fly fisherman from any given region use as a resource for informatio that pertains to their specific region and home waters ... so, my question to you is ... out of the 10's of thousands of alaska orientated websites ... is this one that you rely on exclusively? or at least one of a select few? are there other websites/forums that you would recommend to me as traveling fly fisherman as being valuable or "must sees" before traveling to alaska? ... |

Alaskaflyfish.net is the best fly fishing site for alaska on the web IMO. Although it contains some articles, lots of pictures it's hear and soul is the forum. When it comes to sites dealing with a specific location i really trust ones with a large forum especially when all the money for the site comes from a variety of sponsors and good admin's and moderators. The reason is you will get honest and respectful opinions from people with no financial incentives to give opinions a lot of times from people who live in the area full time which is great. For example say you are looking to fish for coho in Kodiak in Late August. If you ask this question to a site from a lodge on kodiak or even a non fishing site that has financial incentives such as a alaska tourist page then they could say yeah there are silver then, i've had great luck for them in august. If you were to ask this question as someone did a few weeks ago on the AFF forum in the coming to alaska section you would get awnsers from people including myself awnsering for the sole purpose of helping a fellow fly fisherman succeed. There would be several replies telling the whole truth, yeah there can be great fishing for silver in late august especially in the surf but that's the early part of the run so there are less fish than later on and if the run is late which is very possible you are screwed. It would be better if you came in mid september. So in that way i believe it's the best way to gain info for someone coming to alaska you get the whole truth on a specific questions. You can ask very specific questions on where when and how to people who know best. I know even as an alaskan i do, If i'm gonna fish the kenai in late october I can pick the brain of some anchorage guys who fish there every weekend spring, summer and fall.
That being said I don't look past looking at lodge sites if they meet the criteria. Look for lodges in the region you desire that have good word of mouth reputations and are represented by some sort of booking company like cabelas, the fly shop or orvis. These lodges usually are pretty honest with potential clients because a) they probably have no problem booking clients, in fact many like the lodge i work at are booked years in advance and b) if they do stretch the truth it can result with bad reports to the respective booking company which can lead to a lower customer satisfaction rating and/or the booking company stopping to promote the lodge which is bad for business. |

| Jeremy- I am a recent migrant to Oregon from Maine (where i lived and fished for ten years). My best site for info for NE saltwater flyfishing is flyfishinginsaltwaters.com. I am still learning the NW sites. Sorry not to have run into you in Maine; it always struck me as a small group. I was pretty connected to CCA and plan on returning to fish CapeCod as much as I can. i like your site very much, especially the video. Barry |
