Fly Fishing

Hey Everyone,

Heading to Belize in August - I am going to buy a brand new setup for the trip - any recommendations on what to take with me?

Hey Bryan have fun, get the grand slam and make us all green with envy. A few guys from the shop head down each year in October (I can't remember the guide they use, but it is on san pedro island) and they bring 7, 9, 11 weight rods with the line to match. They also bring crab, shrimp patterns along with some tarpon flies. If you plan on looking for bones and permit from foot, I would think about buying or renting some flats boots or water friendly sandles. Make sure you purchase "tropical" fly line. The water will be super warm there and if you roll with a standard floating line it will get gummy and cast like crap. I would look into the Wulff triangle taper. Are you going to Turneffe?

I was there this past April, staying on Caye Caulker. 8-9wt will work for bones, but if you go for the slam you will need something in a higher wt. I brought a 9wt, but was able to use a 10 that the guide had to help cut through some of the wind that picked up that day.

There is some great D.I.Y. fishing along all of the islands and bones can be found right off many of the docks. There is also some good night fishing under the dock lights, Barracuda will follow baitfish in and circle the lighted water if you want to take a shot at one.

Crazy Charlie patterns in pink and brown worked the best for me, you should get a few with weighted eyes and a few without depending on if the fish are feeding or cruising.

I also recommend carrying a rod with you at all times if possible, my last day on the island I ended up taking a quick swim before my flight and snorkeled through a school of bones that stayed in that area for a good 15 minutes before moving on. My rod was already packed back in the room....next time.
