Hey, I was just wondering what editing software you use for your videos? Thanks for any info,

as far as video editing software goes ... or any software goes ... you have to first think "what is my intent, what are my expectations?" ... are you going to be producing lord of the rings? how bout the next star wars? or maybe a river runs through it? ... if the answer to those questions is no .. than you are most likely producing fly fishing videos for the web or family videos to share with other family videos worldwide .. basically, you are looking for something easy to use, fast and FUN. now, as with most things, people who know things (even if they only know a little) often like to make it seem like they know something really really hard or complicated .... so, you hear alot of stuff like "i like pinnacle because it's better than premiere pro and movie maker is for jokers because i use a mac and my cousin went to the new york school of film making and i am an artist and blah blah blah and i am special and blah blah blah" ... that may be ... let's take another software for example .. let's say microsoft word .. YES, you can create databases, and integrate very complex excel formulas and infact you can even pubish website and sorts of crazy stuff with MICROSOFT WORD ... but how many people actually do? .. not many. if you are like me .. you basically just write letters or documents and when you get really creative you make something bold or you get really advanced and make something red or you try to impress the person you are sending the document to by making something a hyper link .... and, when all is said and done, that's about all you REALLLY need to do ... everything else is just stuff that, for the most part, software developers include to sell you another "upgrade"! ... well, video editing is no different .. let's look at what you NEEED to do ..

1. get good content

2. most folks forget about #1 , so they are left with having to do all sorts of crazy fade ins and outs and transitions and effects to compensate for the poor content ... but unfortunatley, that only makes matters worse. so, assuming you were successfull with number one and you actually captured some content that you felt was worth showing to someone ..there is really only a coule things you need to do. they are as follows ..

- import your raw content from the camera
- cut out the stuff that stinks
- keep the stuff that doesn't stink
- arrange the stuff that doesn't stink in a creative/interesting way

that's it .. very simple really .. and all video software program does that .. so, ultimately, if you have good content .. it really doesn't matter what software you have ... because you won't need crazy whacky effects and bogus transitions etc...

so -- now that you get how SIMPLE it can be and fun .. ready for the best part .. if you got windows xp or vista .. it's free .. it's on your computer .. it's called "windows movie maker" ... so, if you really want to feel cool and buy something and impress all the ladies you could buy "adobe premier elements" with is a watered down version of adobie premier pro (but really has all the same features .. they don't tell you that though) .. for a watered down price of $99 bucks ... some other popular names that do the exact same stuff are pinnacle, adobe premiere pro, apple finaal cut studio, ulead video studio, sony vegas, powerdirector and on and on and on ....

BOTTOM LINE - if you are looking for high end stuff and you are working with animations and all that good stuff and you really truly are trying to do things and need to do things in a professional cinematography environment .. by all means, you need the high end software options. if you are just looking to have some fun and create some very good films for websites, email, youtueb.com, playback on dvd or your computer .. you can definately do so FOR FREE or very reasonable money .. if you do use windows movie maker .. there is a bunch of tutorials on youtube.com .. you can find them here .. GOOD LUCK! .. can't wait to see your first fly fishing film ..

Hey thanks for the heads-up on the movie maker. Here is a quick practice slideshow/video with the theme from the show The Unit. Kind of corney but hey it's practice!!

good stuff man ... did you know you can change the duration of the still pics ... think of this ... "video" is simply still pictures moving so fast that your eyes can't pick it up .... now i am not saying "that fast" .. but, its a nice creative dynamic and option to not have to be locked into the default 3 or 5 minutes that the program keeps a still image up for ... i just noticed that all your pics in the video were the same length ... that's fine too ... just a tip .. also you can slide one over the other and kind of "slip" into one shot from another if you don't want the sharp break from one shot to another and your looking for a softer transition ... again though, it' all subjective .. these are merely "technical" details i am pointing out ... were the training videos on youtube.com helpful ??? i have never used them .. i just kind of assumed they would be good? thanks.

Thanks for the tips...I was just messing around with the program this morning. When I get a bit more time I will mess with the length of the pics/film and the effects of one pic to another. I browsed the tech tips but I got side tracked (easy to do on youtube!) when I saw a video about ufo's that the mexican military released to our news channels here in the US. Pretty wierd stuff.

too funny dude .. "ufo's etc.." you are so right .. i start out on you tube or google looking for let's say used cars or a used truck and 2 hours go by and i realize that i am reading some article on some website in Scotland about the lockness monster or something so far romoved from where i started that i say to myself, "how the %$#@@$ did i get here, and why am i even reading about this?" ..... ahhhh, i love the web ... tough to put it down ... for example, i told my wife .. an hour ago that i was just going downstarirs to turn off the lights and now an hour has gone by ...
