I'm in the market for a short 4-wt rod. I fish a lot of small streams in Wisconsin that hold plenty of 8-12" fish. The water gets low and fish get spooky in the summer. Long casts are not necessary. But adding some weight to small nympshs is. I also do some backpacking out west and want a rod I can pack in a few miles.
I was looking at the TFO Lefty Kreh Finesse model. 7'9" is the length and it's 4-piece.

My advice would be to narrow it down to 4 to 5 rods in your price range and then go test cast each one. Or better yet, find someone who has the rod your considering and ask them to let you fish with it. Take the fly line and the reel you plan to use and test each rod with that set up. This is where a good fly shop who has demo rods can really help you.
Testing is really the only way your going to find a rod that fits your style of casting and feels good to you.
In fly rod selection and many things in life "opinions are like a**holes - every has one" ...and as such they don't mean much.
I suggest that you look in this rod company in New Hampshire.The name is Great Bay Rod Company. I just got a 2 pic 4wt winding brook. The fly shop I tie flies at just started carring them. But like Chromefinder said get one in your hand and feel it first.

hey snagger, I use a TFO 9' 8wt for steelhead. Not exactly the same rod you are in the market for however, my experience with their customer service was great. I broke my rod in sub-zero temps last winter and they replced it in about a week for $25 no questions asked. Can't argue with that.
Well, I bought a TFO Lefty Kreh Finesse Series 7.5 foot 4wt. I love it. It casts like a dream and is super sensitive. I'm really surprised how far I can cast a wooly bugger with such light line. Very impressed with this rod. Now I just need to catch some more fish with it. I was just out in Steamboat and fished the Yampa right in town while taking a break from skiing . I didn't do too well, but wasn't sure where to go. I did hook one real nice bow that managed to shake the nymph after a nice battle. The 4 wt. TFO had more than enough backbone for this fish. Real happy with this rod.
